Re: Non-question-specific criticisms of IS-80A
(But I see you were the writer, Kevin, so maybe you can tell us whether you intended to smuggle some trash into the academic parts of the distribution...) I remember that I originally wrote the question to discuss the Colombian crack reference, but it was edited out, presumably because of possible ...

Re: Non-question-specific criticisms of IS-80A
a current events tossup on Carla Bruni that begins by discussing the contents of her albums. (could be considered a trash/ce hybrid) If I remember right, the contents of her album in question was a song she said was about Sarkozy, calling him "her Colombian crack." Is that really trash? I...

Re: EFT Discussion
Okay, so prove it. Use your purported neat thinking through purported superior musical knowledge to write a tossup on the "Leningrad" Symphony that uses musical clues and doesn't have the issues this one purportedly has, or I call bullshit on you. MaS The only point I was making was that ...

Re: EFT Discussion
What Dave Letzler is complaining about is sloppy thinking leading to sloppy writing in music questions, particularly when written by people who don't know anything about music. first clue about the winds repeating the violin theme and the third movement's original name being Our Country's Wide Space...

What is Ethics Bowl exactly? I looked at the survey and thought it was a joke, but then I realized the quality of humor among student union types....
Perhaps someone could suggest Beall's behavior as possible questions for this Ethics Bowl.

Re: Sun n' Fun(n) IX Discussion
But Borglum's larger point is correct: the bonuses were ass-hard, especially for the audience in Tampa: some teams didn't convert any bonuses points for rounds at a time (this was tied to their inability to get the tossups to begin with, but those were marginally more accessible).

Re: Sun n' Fun(n) IX Discussion
I don't remember the Ilf and Petrov bonus coming up, but I had to read the Twelve Chairs in a 20th century Soviet History class, and Ilf and Petrov and probably the most widely read (in the most obvious sense: lots of people read them) of the Soviet authors- a basic knowledge of their work is pretty...

Re: ACF nationals discussion
Now, I have nothing against asking for off-the-beaten track stuff, but I'd much rather hear a tossup on the Waldstein Sonata than on Arvo Part. This problem was considerably ameliorated later on, as there were nice tossups on things like The Thieving Magpie and The Seasons, and less "obscure c...

I have the exact opposite reaction: I wish tournaments would start earlier. 9 am seems to me to be the absolute latest a tournament should start. I have to admit this opinion is colored by the fact of driving to so many Chattanooga tournaments from central Florida, so we had to drive up the night be...

Can you post a couple of examples of the sort of tossups you have in mind (not the wesley work:) I have a cultural history of the 19th century on my shelf, for instance, and it devotes attention to things like the evolution of hotel bathrooms and chamberpot design, which were very interesting to rea...

you would be at least equally pressed to find out who outflanked who at the Battle of Fredericksburg. This is a random point, but one of the main points about Fredericksburg is that nobody outflanked anyone- Burnside attacked Lee's line right up the middle, leading to a massacre. But, perhaps the p...

In my opinion, John Vanbrugh, however awesome he may have been, is not an acceptable tossup answer at anything lower than ACF Nationals. While he's no Helene Cixous, a tossup on him at this tournament is completely ridiculous. That may be true, but Aaron Kashtan still got it very early- after a cou...

Dude, how you can claim that the tossups were almost entirely answerable and that there weren't any easy 30s is beyond me. You are free to compare the list I just edited into my previous post with these few examples: We didn't hear any of those bonuses. We played ten rounds, so there were several t...

I think the tournament, logistically at least, went very well, and Ahmad did a very good job running the tournament at USF. I find the complaints about the difficulty of the tournament strange- the difficulty struck me as being perfectly reasonable, and I thought the majority of the questions were w...

There does not need to be 1/1 Canada per packet; in fact, I'm calling for a moratorium on all Canadian geography and pop-culture questions. The moratorium will be lifted when a Canadian team comes to an ACF tournament. How is that connected to anything? Even if getting rid of Canadian questions is a...

on the Fla/Ga v. Weiner match
I am retired from playing, and even if I wasn't it would be difficult for me to play, since I no longer live in the United States. We were hoping to play Weiner at NAQT Nationals last year- I don't ever remember facing him (except in a CBI Nationals game, which he wouldn't think should count, and I ...
