A small point: I take some issue with the bonus part that described Ramon Llull as "Spanish." Llull was born and died in the Kingdom of Majorca, and is usually considered Catalan. He wrote primarily in Latin and Catalan, and is considered the founding father of Catalan letters. A political...

The bakkie is absolutely central to July's People , and, as I recall, the word is used any number of times throughout the novel. "Pickup" probably should have been, in retrospect, an acceptable alternative answer line, as "bakkie" is simply what South Africans call a pickup. Also...

Some thoughts: I do not claim to be an expert in the eschatology of Islam, but the Mahdi bonus should have had "Twelfth Imam" as an acceptable answer. As I understood it, the Twelfth Imam is the Mahdi, at least according to Shi'a Islam, which was the branch specifically mentioned by the qu...

So I think the various strains of thought in this thread have somewhat united into two possible models for this tournament: (1) a Midwest mirror (at Ann Arbor, maybe UIUC) and an East Coast mirror (likely at UMCP) (2) a single site, likely Pittsburgh I'm leaning towards (2), since I would like to s...

Re: Home Field Advantage Matters in Quiz Bowl?
At a college level, at least, I believe there is something to a "home field advantage" - but not anything to do with a particular classroom or building. A team that has to travel to a tournament must get up far, far earlier than a team hosting it - when Yale goes to Penn, for example, we h...

It seems unimportant to me because the 36 30 line was essentially meaningless. It was never used to decide whether or not a new state had slavery. The only repeat-style issue I noticed had to do with Wang Mang and the Han Dynasty. The tossup on the Red-Eyebrow Rebellion (don't remember which packet) mentioned that Wang Mang interrupted the Han Dynasty. "Han Dynasty" was then an answer in a bonus in the Virginia A packet.
