Re: Let's Remember Some Guys III: Let's Remember Yet More Guys

I fear an online tournament will not simulate the full experience which requires starting at like 10:30 PM, running past midnight, be played by people who have been up all day, and at some point features a bumbling Cory Haala buzzing while drunk. That's a bumbling Dr. Cory Haala buzzing while drunk...

Re: Ghosts of Quiz Bowl's Past that You (sorta) Miss....

I miss the days of Minnesota HSQB where the first round of the four-quarter format (the rest was on Patrick's Press, which...) began with ~10-12 "Current Events" tossups that were basically cribbed from that day's Star Tribune . My coach would throw (as turned into "tradition") t...

This was a fun read, Brendan. Thanks. I had the good fortune to compete for Simley HS through middle school and high school and experienced the transition from Patrick's Press to NAQT for the MNHSQB League on Thursday nights. Man, I miss that CE first round. In 8th grade, I started a match against B...

Re: 2014 SCT: general discussion

The McCain tossup leads off with a funny, but not super notable quote from over a year ago that expressed a position held by many Republicans. The next clue is that he didn't support a filibuster on Chuck Hagel even though he gave Hagel trouble during the confirmation hearing, which is also true of...

Re: Bank Accounts

From my time working at a community bank, I'd wholeheartedly recommend trying either that or the credit union route. I'd appreciate any on/off thread comments on the tossups/bonuses I wrote that made it into this set. I don't know if it was ...

So this question, being D-II, is not one that I read but it's a better example than any I can remember by heart (as I don't have access to the questions at this point) of something I mentioned in IRC: it seemed like there were a significant number of mocking or negative references to conservative/R...

Re: Writing Good Current Events Questions

One thing I'd like to see CE questions do more is address policy matters. I would second this. Especially when multiple states are voting on voter ID referendums, it makes for a good common-link tossup to ask about several states' separate policies. It's also helpful when there's a stark contrast b...

I successfully identified Fiddler on the Roof from a song or namethat I heard from the episode (Jews and Chinese Food) of Gilmore Girls where Lorelai and Luke are working on the set of the Stars Hollow Elementary production of Fiddler and Kirk is starring as Tevye.
