Re: Quizbowl sports analogies

And, again like baseball, it's about as entertaining to watch on tv as being hit in the face with a mallet. The wording of this made me briefly picture someone on TV being hit with a mallet, which would be very entertaining. On a more serious note, having competed in curling at a high level (missed...

I'm available to quasi-competently fill a seat for any incomplete team that needs help in video games, '90s music, or obscure sports.

Re: DATE CHANGE: BARGE at Maryland (1/14/12)

Despite my misgivings at facing a field of this caliber and my literal zero writing experience, the phrases "not excessive difficulty" and "open" sound too good to pass up, so I would like to go for free-agent status here.

That means the moderator could not ascertain that "mean" qualifies as an "other word." You can list a dozen "_golden_ [x] or _golden_ [y]" or you can hope that moderators are not completely illiterate. Yes, you could do the former. There is a point at which we are okay...

Thanks. Two other things, though: (1) that question was categorized as physics, not math, so I didn't have anything to do with it; and (2) for that bonus, if you were doing any kind of computation that took longer than five seconds, you were probably doing it wrong anyway. Yeah, I don't know why I ...

However, as this is originally a Canadian event, the folks at Lisgar have kindly given us permission to replace any "excessively Canadian" questions in the set with more Americanized ones of our own in order to accommodate the attendees of our mirror. So I don't get to play on bonuses abo...

It was less than 1.5 hours away for a lot of teams (e.g. Penn, Rutgers-Camden, Delaware) and a max of like 3.5 hours away for the southernmost teams in the region. As the driver for the southernmost team in the region, I can report that our drive to the tournament was 5 hours on Friday night (we fa...

Fantastically chaotic, with every working node on a knot buzzer plus one being in play, answers given ranged from brilliant to hilariously off the mark. In the end David outpaced Isaac for the victory, as reported in the PERV thread on the trash board.

Re: Terrapin Invitational Tournament (1/22/11) at Maryland

So does anyone want to be on my team? Currently it's just me. I'm going to guess that since Mason doesn't get back from break until the week immediately after this tournament, we won't be entering as a team. If that proves true, and if you're willing to accept a pretty lousy teammate, I would be be...

Yes, lames can make the difference between "let's ride the Mr. Schuester train all the way through this Glee bonus" and "oh yay, now we get three parts on people who got silent clocks in 24, " but like you said in the section of your post against them, Michael, "you can't s...

Overall, many of the sports questions seemed quite obscure, although this could be another regional issue. The one that comes to mind is the bonus on Maryland alumni in the NBA. I understand the desire to write about something from your hometown, but this seemed a little too difficult. I think you'...

What preview did the question writer find that was detailed enough to confirm that none of the 3D Sonic Team characters other than Sonic himself are featured in that game or warned of the Wisp capture? By my count, that clue still leaves Sonic, Shadow, Vector, Espio, Charmy, Tails and Knuckles viabl...

I do have one question regarding the specifics of the Sonic the Hedgehog tossup. I don't remember too many of the specifics, but I negged it fairly early on a clue about being held captive on Prison Island in SA2, which was true of Shadow at a point in that game's plot before it happened to Sonic. I, for one, was somewhat disappointed that not every room read the "brought to you by" line at the beginning of every packet. I feel like I missed the joke on half the ones we did hear just because I wasn't ready for them.
