I thought I'd finish off commenting on the philosophy. Michigan B * no philosophy tossup, alas. * Filmer bonus. I thought this was cool, but maybe a little obscure for regionals. Getting to Filmer from Locke is one thing, but starting with a description of Patriarcha might be excessive. Still, it di...

I'd still like to see detailed commentary on the lit, history, fine arts, etc. This could be really useful, I think, assuming capable people are making the evaluations. I don't know if I'm the best person to do it, but a few thoughts along the lines of setht's on the philosophy, which is the categor...

I just want to say that I'm finding this meticulous question-by-question evaluation of the ACF regionals packets really interesting, and I want to thank setht for going to the trouble of doing it. I'm competent to tabulate the answers, but not to offer this sort of indepth commentary on the question...

Is there a reason for everyone to be picking Michigan over Chicago, after Chicago beat Michigan in their sectional? Just based on the regional outcomes, it looks like Michigan should be favored over Chicago on ACF, while Chicago looks better than Michigan on NAQT. Those two schools and Berkeley are ...

I have no personal investment in this ACF set, so I'll pass on defending most of their questions. I'm prepared to believe they screwed up Ibrahim, though one egregious error in 16 rounds seems like an acceptable ratio to me. But I was excited about the Austin tossup. Nobody reads Ayer any more, but ...

I continue to enjoy comparing people's off-the-cuff responses to question sets to the actual questions. A few things I noticed about this year's ACF regionals set, after doing a quick survey: 1) There were a grand total of two questions on Welsh myth (tossups on Rhiannon and Taliesin), which doesn't...

Is this the most pathetic post ever?

Almost certainly not, but it does deserve special mention: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/quizbowl/message/15299 I'm sure it will be topped, but until we have anything better I ask you to take this under consideration for "most desperate bid for attention this year." And let me just say that yes, I d...

I had so much fun comparing geography to philosophy (though I forgot "theology," whatever that means to NAQT: I only know that it doesn't include the Bible, which goes under "literature") that I thought I'd compare sports to social science. Social Science, Mr. Hillemann tells us, will "total in the ...

After saying that it would be interesting to look at the answers from a sample NAQT tournament, I decided to do just that. I've just compiled a chart of the tossup answers from the 2004 sectionals (which was edited by Subash Maddipoti, I believe, and is thus likely to be better than the run-of-the-m...

This was disingenuous then, and it still is now. Anybody who's ever played NAQT knows that there's way more Geography (to take one example) than Fine Arts in any of their sets. By throwing in a clue about when some island was discovered, or when a country became independent, NAQT passes off geograph...

on this....Nathans right about so many things....howells blows, nobody in academia takes him seriously....just like derrida....and phlogiston....but jazz? just listen to my man Miles, you'll know what I'm talking about...sure, we ask about the Peripatetics, but what about Alexander of Aphrodisias? w...

Since nobody else is making predictions, I'll jump in. NAQT: Berkeley looked awfully good last year. If it hadn't been for an out-of-this-world performance by Subash, they'd be going for a three-peat this year. Since I don't think Subash is playing, I'll pick them to win back-to-back titles. Has tha...

Were there ever any more detailed results/reactions posted about the tournament? I haven't seen any stats or discussion.
