Re: Class of 2011 High School Set (Interest Check)

I can write sosci or literature or trash or bio/chem. That said, I will be out of the country from June 22nd to August 10th, which could pose problems.

Re: 2011 HSNCT conversion stats discussion

Could you post the Malthus tossup? For some reason I felt misled by one of the clues. While playing at HSNCT, I remember luckily getting outbuzzed by an opponent who negged with the answer I was thinking.

Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion

packet 1: (Billy Bathgate, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Hours) Our team found this bonus particularly difficult. Granted, our team is not the best out there at Literature, but usually when we miss a bonus part, someone on the team conveys something along the lines of "Oh yeah! I've heard of tha...

Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion

And my team was just a bit more apprehensive than usual buzzing on Turing machine due to Alan Turing being a bonus answer in the round immediately previous. Yeah, I'm nearly certain this was the only tossup in our match against Stevenson that went dead (with neither team even buzzing). I am also pr...

Re: On-going season rankings

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe the ICT is comparable enough to any other set that has been played to have a significant impact on these rankings. Is this true, which is to say, will the Texas Invitational stats not be considered in future rankings? If not, I understand the argument as to why ...

Re: On-going season rankings

Cutting to the chase, Cistercian played with its full team from last year's HSNCT for the first time this year. This same team will be playing at both PACE NSC and HSNCT. In our full truly full strength tournament, we soundly beat the 25th ranked team (St. Marks) soundly, thrice. Additionally, we ou...

It seems as though what they have on bonus conversion they lack on the buzzer.

Re: On-going season rankings

What do you see in St. Mark's? Granted their good stats at state, they jump 15 spots after placing 3rd and posting 22.48 ppb, and losing thrice to lower ranked teams at their latest tournament (at which they played at full strength)?

Re: On-going season rankings

I'm not sure how long ago TQBA Kickoff was, but St. Marks did have 21.33 PPB versus Cistercian's 17.84 PPB (maybe Cistercian was missing a player?). Fred probably took that into account. As for TU conversion and PPB, I like to think of TU conversion as "defense" and PPB as "offense&q...

Re: Texas 2010 - 2011

If I'm not mistaken, Seven Lakes A was missing one player. (maybe more) As far as I know, Seven Lakes was only missing John Agnew, but still had their leading scorer Jiawei I'm pretty sure Seven Lakes A was missing their second best player Johnathan Xu who is now a junior, and who put up over 30 pp...

Re: Texas 2010 - 2011

Yet more evidence for Cistercian's potential this year: It was co-champion (with Seven Lakes) of the TQBA Quad States Challenged, played on HSAPQ questions in Plano on October 16. Stats for aforementioned tournament are at http://texasquizbowl.org/d/10plano/ If I'm not mistaken, Seven Lakes A was m...

Re: Texas 2010 - 2011

It is my understanding that St. Marks hosts a :chip: tournament because the format is popular among local teams and it is a good way to make money, so they can travel to out of state or nationals tournaments.

EDIT: Accidentally shared team secrets

Re: On-going season rankings

Somewhat similar to Mr. Flowers' post, I may clear up the team situations for the two tournaments cited that Cistercian participated in. In an effort to qualify multiple teams for nationals early in the season, for both the Lewis Cup and the TQBA Kickoff, the teams were composed of players from A te...

Texas 2010 - 2011

I'm probably not the person to be broaching this topic because I'm relatively new to the forum and haven't been around Texas quiz bowl seriously for more than a year. Yet, my curiosity to hear what others have to say about Texas quiz bowl overrides any personal doubts. This first post will be focusi...

Out of simple curiosity, how many schools (and which ones) have registered for this Texas Invitational as of Sept 1, 2010?
