Congratulations to Sam Lederer (TJ), who won the second annual Summer Singles tournament by defeating Chris Ray (RM). In the consolation finals, Humza Kazmi (RM) took third and Michael Braun took fourth. Much thanks to everyone who showed up to play, from near and far; and a more specific thank you ...

No cost to attend--due to the generosity of college quiz bowl teams' assistance, you don't have to pay, just like last year. I was reluctant to post a field because I'm waiting for a word from five or six more people who have expressed interest. For now, here's a list of registered players. Evan Sil...

Word on the street is that August 6 is the preferred date— i.e. , I am told that more people will be away for other weekends in August than the first one. Please register now (email me) so that we can get a sense of how many people to expect. Everyone who indicated interest before should also have...

Richard Montgomery returns Chris Ray, which is reason enough to worry, but they've had nothing but solid performance from their non-A teams the past two years, so I'm sure they can ably replace any lost seniors (I know that Humza and at least one of the girls on B team were seniors, but are there o...

whats a power bracket? The top 2 teams from each bracket advance to the playoffs along with 4 wildcards (16 total). Rather than play single-elimination, teams will be placed in 4 groups of 4 for a 3 game round-robin. The top team from each playoff bracket will then advance to a 4 team single-elimin...

Quiz bowl serves as an extra motivator for classes you don't really want to take. Subjects that don't immediately seem useful are more exciting when you can show off what you've learned afterschool. Besides, if you're good enough, you can get away with not studying for quizzes. (Assuming, of course,...

I'm looking forward to babysitting duty. We probably won't be coaching so much as feeding them facts before a tough round or otherwise bossing them around. These types of questions are great for teaching thinking skills. While knowledge is a significant part of the game, the game wouldn't be nearly the same without the buzzer. Being able to reason through a question or see where it's going faster than the next player is an unmistakable part of the gam...

What about States?

Within the top eight, RM B beat Blake, who beat ER, who beat RM A, who beat Gonzaga, who beat RM B. RM C beat WJ A, who beat Blair A, who beat ER, who beat RM C.

I thought IS-51 was kind of strange, but it's still a pretty competitive region.

Because of the way prelims are done, it's better to have a field size that's a multiple of four. Twelve seemed a likely number, but if there's a lot more interest, we do have the resources to increase it to sixteen or twenty.

Oh, and it'll start around 3:30, not 3:00 (as originally stated).
