Re: Moving NAC back towards legitimacy?

We just returned from the St Leo University tournament which is run by rookies but overall is really fun. They use Questions Unlimited. My team won a tie-breaker because we got to the answer to "What color was Moby Dick" a bit quicker. To paraphrase Kirk; I've never trusted "NAC"...

Re: Arts Sets?

My advice would be to get one of the frequency lists on art and then start a file where you collect all the images yourself to study. Heck, you can even go ahead and steal mine off my HS website; http://www.classjump.com/hardeeacademicteam/?section=galleries&gallery_id=7572& it's got 355 wor...

Re: Three team matches

Allow me to begin with the note that my HS team is the four-time FHSAA state champion. We got these big signs around Wauchula to prove it. So when I say that I far prefer NAQT & PACE style to the Disney/NTAE/CAC/Panasonic style, I'm not just being all sour-grapish. But the Florida High School At...

Re: Three team matches

Down here in Florida the state & national tourneys (National Tournament of Academic Excellence (NTAE), nee Panasonic Academic Competition (PAC), aka Commisioner's Academic Challenge (CAC), aka Disney-style, aka Reedy Creek Improvement District, aka ad nauseum...), as some have noted, play six te...

Re: Science! (Not SCIENCE!)

I've gotten Science News for decades and it is a neat clearing house of factoids for the buff who wants to dabble at their leisure. Playing in open tourneys and practicing with my students I'm amazed by how much science junk I know that's straight out of recent issues. Asimov's summaries are excelle...

Re: Geography

My coaching screeds envelope the idea of lynchpins. The mind on recall during play is like a filing system. So I advise, e.g., that one memorize world capitals; then as you learn something new about a geographic item you can hinge it on to your filing system to the most relevant country. So...when s...

Re: Books "for Quizbowl"

Great thread. Okay, here's my opinions; Bulfinch rules on myths and anybody what doesn't think so is sorely mistaken in their ideology. I do love me some Eddas, but methinks Bulfinch is more concise. I'm all about the Great Courses and their monthly advertisement-magazines with lecture excerpts are ...

Re: Blowouts and How to Learn from Them

As a HS coach who's taken groups of goggle-eyed babies to Master's Level tournaments, in my opinion the best product of a behind the wood-shed tar-glute whuppin' is a demonstration of just how good one can be at this art-science-sport we term Quiz. I forevermore tell 'em that a good beating will eit...
