Re: Proposal for another way to deal with misconduct
This is a really well-thought-out idea and I'll have to consider it in more depth, but I think it is a not terribly difficult thing to implement that has potential to move the needle on how we address misconduct in quizbowl. Also appreciate that you've included thoughts on some of the challenges we'...

Re: How We Treat Each Other: 2019
As a moderator, most people don't really care about how good I am as a player or what standing I have in the larger community or even what my name is, and I like it that way. I'm aware that this isn't the broader point of Caroline's post, which we should consider thoroughly as we work on making qui...

I was just wondering why the discord names of the examples were not blacked out as I do not think it would take too long. Yes, I know discord is fairly easy to access and if one really wanted to be find the names it would not be hard, but not everyone in the community is on there. If the men who co...

Re: How to be Better at Being an Ally
Thank you for posting this, Lauren. It's really important not only in the context of misconduct allegations, but also everywhere in the forums (and also on the Discord), that men in particular consider how they engage with women's posts and whether they're complicit (although inadvertently so) in re...

Re: Discussion of the purpose of Collegiate Novice
I don't know if playing a tournament along the lines of Collegiate Novice will help retain these players (and I don't know how to test that hypothesis one way or another), but my intuition is that Collegiate Novice can serve as a reminder of how fun it is to play a tournament. I also think that the...

Hi. I'm Connie, and I've provided the Chicago team with quite a lot of my time and energy in order to make sure that we can go to all of the tournaments every year, so I'll choose to ignore any claim that I do not care about quizbowl just because I don't frequent the board. Something that was touched on by a lot of the people in this thread: variable bonus difficulty. I definitely agree. One example I found kind of funny was "Emma Zunz" in the Borges bonus. I've noticed this coming up several times as lead-ins in kind of hard college events. I don't know why ...

I don't want to sound biased (I'm from the Atlanta area, but I had to fly down from Chicago), but I really liked Atlanta as a tournament site. Also, visiting that huge bookstore that was recommended to us got me a copy of Maria Callas's 1955 La Scala recording of Norma for under $5 and many books well under $1, so thanks for that!

Geography-wise, I totally agree that there need to be more Atlanta tournaments (as Atlanta is about four hours from Vandy and USC, less than four from Alabama, less than three from Clemson, and around six from University of Florida). Georgia Tech and UGA have run good tournaments in the past and are...

The idea is to make teams more considerate of other teams and not take a large advantage of a lesser team. I feel sportsmanship comes into this due to the fact that Quiz Bowl is similar to a sport. The way I see sportsmanship is that each team should help the other, if you can answer every tossup t...
