Re: Bergen Open Academic Tournament (BOAT) II - 5/8/2010 (NJ)

Due to the inability of the interested schools to field teams, this tournament is once again circling the drain. If a true field doesn't really materialize by this Friday, April 30, then we're probably going to have to call off the tournament. (If this does end up happening, but the already-register...

Re: Bergen Open Academic Tournament (BOAT) II - 5/8/2010 (NJ)

OK, some breaking news, of sorts...we need some semblance of a field by Sunday, April 18 if we're going to have any hope of running this. There are many things that still have to be taken care of for this tourney, and there's really no point going forward with it if we don't have a serious field. I ...

Bergen Open Academic Tournament (BOAT) II - 5/8/2010 (NJ)

The Bergen County Academies quizbowl team is pleased to announce its second annual Bergen Open Academic Tournament, scheduled for May 8th, 2010 , which will use questions written by Solon for their Spring Tournament that they are unable to run. Re: NY/NJ 2009-2010

With the NJ state championships coming up in a few weeks, I was thinking we might consider seeing if anyone from the state is interested in the HSAPQ All-Star tournament at Vanderbilt on June 12-13. States might be a good time to decide who would be on such a team, if we can get a couple of coaches...

Bergen's interested. April seems to be a slow month for the region, so the timing is good.

I'll send a formal email after I get a chance to speak to the team, but we'll probably end up registering 2-3 teams with 2-3 buzzers.

Re: Science! (Not SCIENCE!)

I've always found that quizbowl science success seems to begin in classes themselves. If you're exposed to concepts in the class, and you understand them, you'll have a solid science base. When I say solid science base, I mean that you'll probably start to pick up tossups towards the end, or as the ...

Re: What to do with apathetic/unmotivated players

Even though I've only been with quizbowl for the past year and a half, I've found that's long enough to see the preponderance of apathy that, I fear, might sink Bergen in 2-3 years. As I've understood, we've had solid teams for as far back as any current players can remember, perhaps even further ba...

Re: Dunbar Mirror at Bergen (Hackensack, NJ) UPDATE: NOW 12/5/09

In retrospect, I realize that December 5th was a bad day to hold a tournament - when we had initially rescheduled from the original Halloween date, we hadn't checked to see if the new date was an SAT/SATII day, which it was. We had a couple of tournament staffers come late for this very reason. Also...
