Re: ACF Fall New England: Brandeis (6 November 2010)

As I recall, I competed in Fall and Winter (and also MUT) for the past two years with EPHS, so I thought I would have to. Maybe that's not the case, though?

As Neil (Gurram) said above, I'm definitely not dropping out of quiz bowl just yet; just busy this weekend. Plus, we would have had to write a packet, which I neglected to do this summer.

Re: 2010 HSNCT discussion thread

I'll echo the sentiment that this was the best HSNCT yet. The vast majority of tossups seemed great to me: pyramidal, reasonable answer choices, all that good stuff. In general, the questions basically seemed to do a good job of distinguishing between better teams and worse teams, which is the point...

Re: Where Are You Going To College Next Year

If you and/or anyone currently there (Kai, Anurag, etc.) want to work on reviving the team, Harvard is radically in favor of just that. I hear that the MIT team is still holding practices, just not much else, in case that helps your plans. Yeah, I did go to a practice they hosted over Campus Previe...

Re: Where Are You Going To College Next Year

MIT most likely Awesome! It'd be really cool to see their quizbowl team reactivate; they had a really good program not long ago and the talent is definitely there. As for me, I'm headed to Yale. I believe that noted good quizbowl player David Huang from Charter is also headed to MIT. Third MIT here...

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Spring Offensive at HSNCT (5/29/2010)

Eden Prairie also seems to have a question mark. We will certainly be attending, although I don't have a final roster yet. Do you need a roster before the tournament? If so, by what date?

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

I'll just weigh in belatedly on a couple aspects of Saturday's tournament. Going into the tournament, the four teams I thought we had the greatest change of losing to were STA, SPC, DLS, and Chaska. Of these four, we only played SPC (albeit twice), in part since all four of them ended up on the othe...

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

I agree with what has been said about the playoff structure: sure, it saves time, but I don't think most of the teams would mind moving playoffs to a Saturday and having a full-length tournament to decide the league winners. It's also unfortunate that the format on which the league finals are played...

Re: NAQT and distribution change

This might be taking things in a slightly different direction, but why not reduce trash (or computational math) in favor of religion and mythology? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the high school distribution has 0.9/0.8 religion and mythology out of 24/24 per packet, significantly less t...

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

I have heard very few true literature lightning rounds, and science comes up around once per meet. Much more common are geography, politics, world facts, "name the word which...", and cross-disciplinary "name the person"; these stuff are all easy to list. I actually remember a p...

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

There was also a lot of play at the level that said "this team made a good decision in not going to ACF Winter". I'm not entirely sure what you meant here, but for the sake of clarity: I certainly don't think Gaurav or anyone was suggesting that every team should go to ACF Winter. Experie...

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

Hmm, okay. I sure look dumb now, don't I?

It's possible that it was just a perception bias. I'd still like another look at those packets, though; my team and I weren't the only ones to get that impression. I'll report back if and when we get a copy of the set.

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

I didn't attend TOMCAT (instead opting to play ACF Winter, which turned out to be a wise decision), but while we have this distribution here courtesy of Jeff, I'll throw a few things out there in relation to Thursday night league play. In this distribution, we have something like the following. My m...

Re: Fall Novice Tournament Discussion

I would consider this set a success. I saw a round in which all 20 tossups were answered, which made me very happy (the average Minnesota team is not particularly good; I remember a 45-15 round at last year's mirror of Hunter Prison Bowl*), and most rounds saw most tossups answered. I do think that ...

Re: Minnesota '09-'10

Gaurav and I are on here from EP, as well. I'm glad somebody finally started this thread.

As far as I'm concerned, the quiz bowl season starts at EFT tomorrow, and it looks like you'll be there as well. Good luck!
