Re: 2020 ACF Winter - General Discussion and Thanks
(e.g. Ashalaho and Ashshipíte seemed similar enough to Ashkúale for a moderator to recognize a knowledgeable player's answer). This is illuminating and, I think, a very unusual philosophy of answerline acceptability. In general we give points for saying what's in the answerline, not for sounding kn...

Re: 2020 ACF Winter - General Discussion and Thanks
I'm happy to see the return of ACF Winter and I thought this set was successful in a lot of ways. In particular it seemed like there was real attention paid to highlighting women, BIPOC, and other people who are often underrepresented in quizbowl, which is great! I also thought this set did well at ...

Re: 2020 ACF Winter - Specific Question Discussion
I enjoyed reading this set! There were a lot more good ideas than I could list, but I remember particularly enjoying the bonus on fantasy coffins and the tossup on creoles. [10] In the guru–shishya system, students lived at gurukulam while supposedly using these scriptures to learn mathematics and a...

Re: LIT Mid-Atlantic Mirror @ Discord (9/5/20)
The "top-scorer grad student on a top 5 team" thing bears repeating, though. When you're in a position that powerful & prominent, your actions can disproportionately affect others and you have an obligation to keep that in mind. Having even one person, let alone two (!), cheat at your ...

Re: Mandatory reporting and misconduct
Is it actually a net benefit for quizbowl to have a default position on when player bans and the like are (to use Olivia's words) "not enough of a response" / when to encourage going through other channels? Or is it better to perform a more expansive version of what I was taught to do in ...

I have been wondering about the Title IX implications of misconduct reporting in quizbowl. My Title IX training has taught that graduate student TAs (and those in similar student-facing roles) have reporting obligations for Title IX violations, including sexual harassment and misconduct, that occur ...

At your staff meeting, tell your staff that along with their quizbowl responsibilities, it’s their job to maintain a certain standard of behavior in their rooms, and that they should bring any concerns to you. Re: ACF Fall 2019 Specific Question Discussion and Errata
I felt that the Hanukkah tossup was way too easy with the lead-in. Anyone who went to Hebrew School at any point could first-line it. Given Judaism is still something of a minority religion in the US, this doesn't seem like a huge problem, aside from the fact that a good share of quiz bowlers are J...

I enjoyed reading the set! Can I see the spectrogram/larynx/nose bonus (bonus 9 in I think round 14)? This is very much in my real-life field so I was excited to encounter it. However I remember the "larynx" part saying something about how spectrograms aren't used to analyze voicing in fav...

Maybe I should have been more clear; the statement was that John wanted the set to practice reading those questions specifically, to practice pronunciation and so on. I get this request a lot when I run tournaments, mostly from inexperienced readers.

As announced in the other thread, MIT is vacating its first place win at Penn-ance. We can’t provide proof of misconduct by Josh as definitive as NAQT can for SCT and ICT, but we wanted to explain the observations and events that led to this decision. We were very under-staffed for Penn-ance, and Jo...

In light of the recent developments regarding Josh's performance, MIT has decided to vacate its Penn-ance win. While we don't currently have any definitive proof of misconduct on Josh's part, we think the situation with NAQT raises enough questions about Josh's playing at Penn-ance to justify vacati...
