Re: HSW Invitational (1/10/09) @ HS West (Dix Hills, NY)

haha absolutely not trying to make a name for myself. I actually only plan on coming if there are computational questions. If there aren't, I will silently stay out.

You can count New Rochelle in, but on one condition:

Will there be computational math/science questions?

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

kind of. But I don't see what that has to do with the validity of pop culture as an academic subject

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

But I don't understand what makes the operas "fine art" and academia and intelligence relating to modern culture unnecessary and frowned upon. A debate on the validity and content of high/low culture distinctions is probably beyond the scope of this board; for now, can I ask you where you...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

In addition to math, I am curious about pop culture. Why are operas more sophisticated than modern pop music? Why should we know Beethoven's 9th symphony and not Lupe Fiasco's single "Hip-hop has saved my life?" Explain to me, someone please, why we ignore these categories? Because quiz b...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

So you really believe that a tournament that asks lots of one-line tossups and has category rounds on rhyming words really tests knowledge better than 20/20 pyramidal academic competition? You sicken me. Alright that's a little ridiculous. I don't think that comment was called for at all, because I...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

That's actually kind of humorous, but I still don't think you can judge a whole style from one question, or even one thousand questions. It's a good tournament set-up; it provides variety and more ways of getting points.

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

Man, I'm so glad now I know that being able to identify a blender from its sounds makes me more well-rounded than reading Amos Tutuola while listening to Einstein on the Beach. I'm sorry that your team seems to think that you can get really good and have fun by memorizing lists. Most of us don't do ...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

I really dislike how you all look upon quizbowl as if it is inherently better than every other competition, just because you guys love it. This was the first real PACE tournament we've ever played (We played at Cornell a couple weeks ago, and finished in second, sans our best player) and had a great...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

What none of you realize is the actuality that math questions, despite not being able to be answered before the end of the question, are in fact pyramidal. If you have to think about how to do the problem, even for a full second, before you can start computing, then it is conceptual. The fact is tha...

Re: Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

Also, consider it this way: People use calculators to do math comp. People have to use their brains to figure out the applications of the Quantum Hall Effect. Guess which one is preferred in Quizbowl. No one has to use their brains for this. Knowing the Effect is solely an application of pure memor...

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA

BGSO-
That's a completely irrational argument, seeing as strength and fitness has to do with your body, not really your mind. Any by the way, I would LOVE to have a benchpressing contest in the next quizbowl tournament..

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA

Unfortunately, eliminating math and that kind of stuff does not make for a more academically challenging tournament. I apologize for assuming that you had not informed us, because apparently you actually had, but that does not mean I agree that adding math makes it not "good quizbowl." Yes...

Yet another math thread (split from HFT)

What is the deal with no computational math questions? No offense, but tournaments do not end up showing the true power of well-rounded teams without its fair share of math/sports/culture questions. New Rochelle is very trained (for lack of better word) in all three of these categories, but were una...

Re: Cornell's Cayuga Championship (10/25/08) @ Ithaca, NY

Barry- On behalf of New Rochelle HS, we had a blast at your tournament. Not only was it very well-run, it provided sets of questions with just the right amount of difficulty. Would have liked to have seen more teams from far away (like us), in order to provide a variety of competition, but not every...

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA

Hey-
Does anyone know what time the tournament will start/end? Also, how much is it for a room at the Inn? We MIGHT stay there if it's cheap enough, but most likely not. The starting/ending times are crucial, though, so if they could be posted, that's be great. Thanks

New Rochelle will try to come to this tournament, so save a spot. I'd say chances are 50-50. If so, we will bring a buzzer set. Get back to you ASAP
