Re: College Novice Mirror at UF (9/24)

Also, Jay's sister, Priya, still goes to UM, and was on my quizbowl team in high school; she may be worth contacting as well.

Re: College Novice Mirror at UF (9/24)

Apparently some former Walter Johnson player named Ashu Joshi goes to UMiami, and misses playing quizbowl/might be interested in starting a team. Contact Raynell Cooper or Kuo-Kai Chin for his contact info/more info about that piece of intelligence.

Re: Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?

I am pretty certain UMiami doesn't have an active team. The captain of my high school (Ransom Everglades) quizbowl team few years ago (Jay Sridhar) matriculated to UM, and was an editor for an ACF Fall tournament few years ago, but I don't think he took the effort to create a team there. Short answe...

Or alternatively, as John suggested, could Harvard borrow a buzzer from MIT (the closest school to you guys that has an active quizbowl program) for the weekend?

Could Harvard stop by Brandeis on the way to Yale and pick up the Brown team's buzzers (assuming they're coming by car)?

Re: WUHSAC XIII (01/29/2011) at WUSTL (St. Louis, Missouri)

Yeah, there are not a lot of tournaments thrown in our area (Miami/the general Florida region), and we're lucky to have the resources to be able to fly out to other quality tournaments like WUHSAC and QUaC. And yes, Frap is still the coach there. Glad to see the national eye is still upon our school!

Re: Announcement: 2010 Chicago Open, Chicago, IL (July 23-25)

Hey guys, My name's Matt Hoffer-Hawlik, a member of Yale QB and a potential staffer of CO. As i'm looking for alternative housing other than hotels (I am indeed a poor college student), I was wondering if anyone living in the Chicago area could put me up Sat. night, as I'll need to staff CO side eve...

Re: WUHSAC XII (01/30/2010) at WUSTL (St. Louis, MO)

That they did. Our coach is a WUSTL alum, and my alma mater has been trying to find more quality high school tournaments to travel to outside of Florida in this past year. Glad to see they haven't lost the old magic touch!

Re: Florida '09-'10

Pretty much Ransom Everglades. Not sure if any of the other schools in our area know about NAQT, or even about any quizbowl format...we were lucky in that our high school teachers happened to be ex-quizbowl players on the circuit. From what I can tell, our team hasn't gone to anything yet this year,...

Re: 2009-10 Preseason Top 50

Hoover will be crazy good. Having played them at full strength in the 2009 HSNCT, and won and lost once, I am shocked to learn that they will be returning all of their players... I have no doubt that if they go to NSC and HSNCT, they will be competing for the top five.

Re: 2009-10 Preseason Top 50

Completely agree with Kay in that Pensacola (and Ransom Everglades, for that matter, even though we have lost some key players) are definitely capable of making some waves next year from an area of the country not necessarily known for good quizbowl  Will be looking upon this next HS quizbowl ...

Hey, Fred. You mean me? I went to Ransom Everglades, not Pensacola  And nope, I will not be back; off to Yale in two weeks! I'll make some predictions too, now that I'm here. 1. Pensacola. Having lost no one to graduation, David, Kay, Helie, and Nathan, especially, will be quality players with...

Re: Any interest in a HS Tournament in NW FL?

I think my high school's team (Ransom Everglades) would be interested, as you are correct in saying that Florida has a definite dearth of quality high school tournaments. However, it's a long drive (maybe 8-9 hours?). Contact my former coach, Steve Frappier, at sfrappier@ransomeverglades.org if you ...

Re: Next Year

Hey, how about Florida? I know that Florida is not necessarily a perennial power in quizbowl, but our team did tie for 17th at the HSNCT this year, and had another team (Pensacola) go relatively deep into the playoffs. I know that both my team, Pensacola, and another from Dr. Phillips are all trying...

Re: Florida '08-'09

Kay, I agree with you- Dr. Phillips was a fun surprise, though they have fielded good teams in the past, with Bo Sun as their captain. Nevertheless, they were a solid team, and should do relatively well at Nationals, though maybe not playoff level- 5-5 is my prediction. I'm a little disappointed tha...

Science Study Sources...
