Re: Welcome to the 2010 SCT discussion.
What about the awful redshift question? Using a classical test of general relativity as an initial clue, then following it up by saying "gravitational form of this effect" and finally "can be caused by differences in velocity" before explaining that it is related to the Doppler e...

Re: Chicago Open 2009 Discussion
I think there's major support for doing something about o-chem taking over the chemistry distribution; at the bare minimum, a hard cap of 1 o-chem question per packet is long overdue. The issue with doing that is there isn't quite as much inorganic chemistry to write questions on. Watch for history...

Re: Behavior at tournaments & productive feedback
Once my teacher was reading college questions and read a question about David Mamet. It seemed to have been written by David Mamet. The extra swearing didn't really contribute anything to the question. I mean, a question about Sade which describes his work is one thing, but the mamet question should...

Re: Next Year
BCA is keeping Jay (bio king) and Gabe (US politics). Stephanie Yuen is going to become better, and she already knows more about China then anyone else. Of course we don't stand a chance against those crazy Hunter eighth-graders. I have no idea what Guy has done to them. But I think that as Jay impr...

Better Stats
Does anyone have a better bunch of stats then PPTH, P/N, and bonus conversion to rank teams and players? These statistics breakdown because of failing to account for field difficulty and because bonus conversion can potentially be on the basis of one bonus, which would give an unrealistic idea of ho...

Re: An Open Letter to NAQT
I agree that this is strangely similar to a math competition - in fact, I wouldn't object to a math competition that used solely this type of question in tossup form a la quizbowl. What I object to is combining this perfectly acceptable math competition with quizbowl because it doesn't follow the s...

Re: Midwest Championship on May 10, 2008, at Culver Acad. (IN)
I find that an incredibly ignorant statement and one which doesn't reflect the issue that me and Andrew were bringing up. Which is what, exactly? What are you proposing, in concrete terms? I suppose some kind of schedule in which six teams from the same school did not all land in the same division ...

Re: An Open Letter to NAQT
Instead of these silly word problems that deal with algebra computation and geometry computation, let us throw in calculus computation and linear algebra computation. What is needed for math computation to become a serious category of quizbowl is to expand its canon. Go beyond the high school curri...

Re: Buzzing Strategy
I have a buzzing strategy recommendation. I push the button when I think I know an answer. This reminds me of a classic pep talk that Austin Zheng gave when I was a freshman: "If you know the answer, buzz in. If you don't know the answer, don't buzz in." My version: "If you think you...
