Re: Welcome to the 2011 SCT discussion

Please do not set up phrasing like this: "Blah blah blah name this series called Doctor Who. <Doctor Who>. Correct. This spinoff <I interrupt with "Torchwood"> of Stargate..." ESPECIALLY in a timed tournament that's just a way to screw someone with knowledge of various science f...

Re: Welcome to the 2011 SCT discussion

Can someone explain why "Jewish prayer shawl" isn't an acceptable interrupt for "tallit?" Things have names. You gotta know those names. In English, the name is "prayer shawl." Either that, or lots of other tu are incredibly inconsistent. I have given the five Ks as ha...

Welcome to the 2011 SCT discussion

DII questions: I am fairly tilted after this tournament so I'm just going to make two points and save the rest for when I'm a bit calmer. Please do not set up phrasing like this: "Blah blah blah name this series called Doctor Who. <Doctor Who>. Correct. This spinoff <I interrupt with "Torc...

Re: General discussions and thanks

In the music video to this song, the singer is disgusted to find out that a man is wearing a toupee, which the singer promptly stuffs in its owner's mouth, while an earlier scene shows singer sending text messages such as "TOOLBAG ALERT!" and "What a mega douche MASTER!!!" The s...

Re: General discussions and thanks

-I wondered while writing it if Grendel's Mother was just negbait for Grendel, and sure enough it was when I was reading. Not sure what others thought--I tried to only use clues that applied to the mother. I negged this way, but it was pure stupidity--I buzzed, thought "don't neg here by sayin...

Re: General discussions and thanks

As I recall, I got negged for "mass" on "molecular weight" which I think is crazy. I think there was a small factual error in the Blah Blah Blah TU, could someone post that? I was able to steal the "Delft" tossup from a far superior fine arts opponent due to the tossup ...

Re: Difficulty Swings

Yeah, I alluded to this with my faux-outrage at the notion that something like "convex hull" is a good tossup choice for this tournament. You really need to have taken some kind of topology to even know what that is, and I imagine the number of people at any of the sites that could answer...

Re: Welcome to the 2010 SCT discussion.

The malaria tossup spent over a line in power describing the life cycle of the parasite. I noticed this sort of issue with a lot of questions: A clue would be offered, and then described and described. It seems that question space would be better taken describing multiple clues that more people mig...

Re: Welcome to the 2010 SCT discussion.

Notes off the top of my head (no questions in my hands): Without text or expert knowledge, I'm not sure, but was the beta-decay tossup even unique to beta-minus? I got negged for beta, and I'm honestly unsure if that's correct. I did not write that question, but I did read it while doing a topic ch...

Re: Welcome to the 2010 SCT discussion.

Notes off the top of my head (no questions in my hands): Feynmann diagram clues are (IMHO) rarely particularly useful. Moreover, if you don't buzz off the first sentence of such a clue, a whole paragraph is really not going to help. There are plenty of clues for beta decay, please use them. Without ...

Re: THUNDER Discussion

I certainly appreciated the points I got from them, but I also question the high rate of CS and especially math. For something that's supposed to live only in "1/1 other science" there sure was a lot of it: cantor, lebesque integral, tarski, dirichlet, dijiskstra just off the top of my hea...
