Thinking of joining OR starting team at San Diego State

As the title suggests, I'm thinking of starting a quizbowl team over at that university if a current team doesn't already exist. So far my google searches have turned up nothing, so...yah. >.>

Anyone on here actually from SDSU and would like to join or something?

Re: Southern California 2007-08

If you guys are wondering what the match-ups are:

Game 1: Rancho Bernardo vs. Carlsbad

Game 2: Rancho Buena Vista vs. Canyon Crest Academy

Game 3: Torrey Pines vs. Westview

Game 4: Fallbrook vs. Mt. Carmel

mcalmvp. :P
We're playing your team in the first round.

Re: Senior Destinations 2008

San Diego State, but they don't have a team. I'm hoping to transfer out in my second year to somewhere like UCLA or Berekeley. I just got screwed over by my financial aid.

Re: Southern California 2007-08

Okay, I have a question since the 2008 tournament is coming up soon on April 24th.

How exactly do they pick the 1, 2, and 3 seeds for the tournament, and does that really even make a difference?

This is NCAL still by the way.

Re: Southern California 2007-08

First of all, yes, I apologize, I did mean Academic League when I posted my last. :P Second, I think Fallbrook never goes to any NAQT tournaments because of financial stuff (i.e. we're poor xD). I think the Varsity team would all agree that we'd want to, but we probably won't. And yeah, what is up w...

Re: Buzzer Systems

I don't get it either. xD
We used to use those handheld buzzers for our home meets and now we're stuck with...'The Judge'.

Re: Southern California 2007-08

I think they're only really good in their own district play. Our team A nearly beat them twice in a recent local tournament we had this weekend, and we only lost by a couple of toss-ups.

Re: The Beatles

Haha, good to know.

To be fair, the guy hated classic rock, and by that logic he hated the Beatles too, but he likes a couple of their songs, presumably the ones that have a lot of drumming.

Re: Buzzer Systems

I think the decision was based on the premise that since different teams had different buzzer system, it created an 'unfair advantage' for the home team for a particular match.

I actually know people who love the songs but hate the band. I think the two are mutually exclusive.

San Diego County 2008

I'm not sure if this is a good topic to start since there's the Southern Cal thread going around (but, of course, the San Diego League is just a small part of it) , but oh well, I really want some feedback from my local area... Good teams like Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo, and Southwest come from h...

The Beatles

No music topics active? :(

That makes me sad. So, anyone like the Beatles, both the band and their songs?
I'm a big fan, hence the Lennon avatar and signature, and a big pool of knowledge on anything about their songs.

QuizBowl: Teams that are serious and teams that play for fun

Is there really any difference between teams that consider competition in quizbowl events in any format a serious deal and teams that participate just for the 'fun factor' or so to speak? I usually see that the 'serious' teams always wear ties and are so intense during the whole match that they seem...

Re: Buzzing Strategy

I've never heard of this sliding thing. I just slam the buzzer as hard and quick as I can to answer, so I really can't discern whether that actually makes a difference. But as for our team's buzzing strategy, it's just what most of you have already said, which is just getting used to our own system....

Most Improbable Last-Second Winning Answers

Anyone experience this? Say you're leading by say 5 points or any point that can be overtaken by a toss-up plus a bonus combo. There's 5 seconds left on the clock. Then the moderator gives you the last toss-up of the day and you're thinking, man, we are so going to win, there's no way the other team...

Re: Buzzer Systems

I used to hate handpads because our rival school used to use them on every home match, but now that it's a required thing for all teams in our league to have them, I've grown used to them.

But handheld ones are the best, despite the fact that they're banned now. D=

Hahaha. I remember a friend got the answer 'hermaphrodite' once and the follow-up bonus was about sexually-based answers. She knew them all. And she hung her head in shame.

Re: Southern California 2007-08

Well this was a nice find from Google. :) I'm a player on the Fallbrook High team in North county myself and it honestly really is sad that we're never mentioned in anything despite the fact that we've been pretty successful for the past 5 years or so on the Varsity and JV levels. But I'm not compla...
