Re: Best Quizbowl Question of 2016

I quite liked the tossup on Bohemian Rhapsody at Penn Bowl that was written like a classical music tossup -- complete with score clues! I hadn't seen this, till now. I thought this tossup was pretty cool, however, I'm wondering where the Cavalleria Rusticana clue came from. I can't seem to find any...

Congratulations to all teams who attended, and to Duke, who beat Virginia A after a two-game advantaged final! Teams played a 9-game round robin, followed by another round for placement purposes (except for the top two teams who obviously played two). I hope that everybody had a good time at this e...

Move the dead tossup button above the scoresheet; it currently requires scrolling.

At BHAI this weekend, we had problems with scoresheet submission. Click submit, and then the button stopped working and nothing happened.

Re: 2014-15 NAQT IS sets: question-specific discussion

To be fair, "divine wind" is not a word and so would be wrong. It could easily be considered a compound word in English. It refers to a specific thing (kamikaze) that doesn't take its meaning from its constituent parts; it's similar to the type of meeting called a "round table."

Re: Could High-Level College Quizbowl Stand to be Easier?

I think everything's fine as it is in terms of what ACF and NAQT sets are at. The notion of "regular" difficulty should be easier, and there should be more tournaments at this easier "regular difficulty". That being said, Division 1 SCT and ACF Regionals should stay the same. It...

A thought on outreach

Bad quizbowl people have reasons to defend their formats, even if they are not good ones. It could be fiscal, personal emotional investment in questions they themselves wrote, bureaucratic, or whatever. They're likely to see us as a threat, just the way we see them as a threat. This is not to say w...

Re: VTACO 2015 Question-Specific Discussion

I suspect you're overestimating our target difficulty. This was intended to match the difficulty of an IS set. As an example, NSC 2013 has "Anitra's dance" as the first clue out of power, and I think that that's a reasonable spot for our earlier clues to be coming from. Don't get me wrong ...

It should be noted that Rice was one of maybe two or three out of the 90 or so tournaments we had last year that was not a school that was also playing with up to six teams in the bowl for free. I think that you'd have better run events if you paid more and did not encourage host schools to field 6...

I was on my way to Martinsville High School to meet the bus to go to VHSL Regionals in 2004. At the time, I lived about 25 miles from school. Losing at VHSL regionals by 5 because our captain refused to give an answer to a directed question. Eliminated us from the tournament, and kept us out of VHSL States. Of course, this was in 2004. I'd been in a car wreck on the way there. It was a terrible day.
