Moravian had our first practice yesterday. We return two from last year's HSNCT team. We're still not sure about our two other spots, but we had a nice turnout at practice and we hope to find two or more people to fill those spots. We will probably continue to play more in the NJ/NY area this season...

Despite the fact that our exclusivity rules treat eastern and western Pennsylvania separately (to reflect typical travel and tournament-attendance patterns), NAQT still only has a single Pennsylvania championship. Unfortunately, due to lack of interest, the Moravian Academy Quizbowl Team has had to cancel its MANIAC tournament. We appreciate the support of those teams who were interested in the tournament and we hope to be able to try again in the future.

The quality of the field is not an unknown when teams start signing up, even if those teams coming have no control over the questions they will be asked. Housewrites vs. NAQT

With housewritten tournaments becoming more and more abundant, I was wondering if they are truly better than buying questions from a company. It's obviously more lucrative for a team to do a housewrite, but can they provide the same or better experience than company questions? What are your thoughts?

The name of the tournament will probably be the Moravian Academy Northeastern Interscholastic Academic Competition (MANIAC).

(Don't think that because the tournament has "Northeastern" in the name, only northeastern schools can come. We just needed an N for the acronym)

From personal experience, group practices are a mixed blessing for freshman (and other new players). Group practices show very quickly who can really play with the A-team, in my opinion, much more accurately than any test. I forgot to mention, we're located in Bethlehem, PA. For those who aren't familiar with Bethlehem, it is 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 8 miles from the New Jersey border.

We did not get a single geography question all day. Also, for the first half of the preliminaries, all "pencil and paper ready questions" were chemistry, not math. I appreciate the effort of the Yale team, but it did not measure up to an NAQT packet set.
