Re: Playing Charter a lot

Our practices are twice a week (is very very difficult to have more than that with all their other commitments, and my own sanity at times), lasting at least 2 hours, often 2.5. I don't know exactly how to phrase it, but i need to be much more strict on things next year in practice... almost unfort...

Re: Freshmen

Maybe holding freshman practices during the summer would be better.

You'll know who actually wants to be on the team. I mean seriously, who would want to spend their summer doing quick recall? Of course, only those that are dedicated and wish to be on the team.

Re: Freshmen

Probably the biggest issue with Freshmen for me, is that they're usually buzzer shy. God forbid they actively go for answers because they are afraid they'll get it wrong. I have this one freshmen who has the annoying habit of saying "I knew that" after a lot of toss ups, and then I'll say...

Re: Freshmen

I don't think that making freshman "feel like they are smart" is the best thing to do. 1) They become arrogant 2) They become satisfied with winning buzzer races 3) They're less motivated to get better Of course this depends on the person's attitude One other possible practice option would...

Re: Freshmen

You could do a free for all game Anyone can buzz in at anytime during the question but can only buzz in once This allows players to be more aggressive You could also put a limit for the number of correct questions a player can get So if a player is totally pwning everyone else, he/she will only be p...

I am working to get them loaded on to my web page at U of L, once they are loaded I will post them. We had some server issues recently. Hopefully in the next day or so I see Nice tournament though. Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

As I had pointed out Chip Beall hasn't been able to get back to television. College Bowl has never been able to get back to television despite the success of Jeopardy! Game shows on ESPN have come and gone; Stump the Schwab has been relegated to ESPN Classic I think. Panasonic is probably on public...

Re: Lists

But I think that with memory, the familiarity helps when hearing questions. For example, a player is more likely to remember the clues (hard ones included) to a Grapes of Wrath question if he has studied famous authors and associated Steinbeck-Grapes of Wrath than if he has never heard of the work....

Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

Another way to accommodate more people is to use harder clues for tossups and ask questions of the expanded canon on bonuses. Of course this would lead to longer questions, but this can be countered by faster readers and maybe a lesser amount of questions. Also based on the recent NAQT packets I've ...

Re: Lists

Write questions on things you put on lists.
I no longer use lists because they don't help you power much in NAQT.
Writing pyramidal questions do help you power. Especially if you've read through a bunch of packets, because then you know what the canon is.

Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

Okay on that note, would it make sense to have your best players split up during practice sessions and then put them together for tournaments? That would be a good idea. Usually you put them together a week or two before tournaments. I know this would be a problem if you have tournaments every week...

Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

That's a horrible idea. Maybe your A team should be the best combination of 4 players, and your B team be the 2nd best combo, etc. Not saying the coach couldn't be flexible.. Assuming your best players are those with experience, then this would help keep your team competitive for many years. Rather...

Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

Probably the best method to create a depth of players that you can choose from is to choose the top four of each class (as in freshman, sophmore, junior, and senior classes). Maybe I'm reading this the wrong way, but I'm not really sure what you're saying here. Can you clarify, please? (Specificall...

Re: Evolution of High School Quizbowl

Consider that just three years ago Lakeside and Mission San Jose were both incredible teams. Where are they now? Once that particular group of players moved on, those lights fizzled. Yea, basically it comes down to good coaching. If a coach can create a competitive environment, students start study...

Re: Yes, it's another thread about math

Why should quiz bowl just be about retention of what you read about in school and out of school? Quiz bowl is a test of knowledge, not a test of the application of said knowledge. If we're going to force application of mathematics knowledge, then it only follows that this must apply across all subj...
