Re: January 2011 Regular Tournaments in the West
There have been TONS of tournaments so far. THUNDER is this weekend. Please go to the already existing ones. THUNDER will be reg dificulty, and SCT and Regionals aren't far from it. If my memory serves me right: Past: Some Mirror - UCSD (summer) ACF Novice - UCSD EFT - Claremont ACF Fall - Caltech M...

Re: Throwing a Game
Most tournaments I have run or staffed are of the following structure: Field is divided into group (say 18 teams in 3, 6 team groups). If there are a total of say 6 really good teams, we try to put two good teams in each bracket. We just distribute the good teams evenly among the groups. Each group ...

Throwing a Game
Hypothetically, let's say a team wants to throw a game (lose on purpose). There are a few reasons for this - Maybe they want to leave early, so they want one more team to get in to the playoff division. Maybe they may lose to their B team so that both get in the top X of the field, and both qualify ...

Re: Early Autumn Collegiate Novice at UCSD (10/9)
Congratulations to Caltech, who swept the field by 2 games. It was great to see so many new players out there today - and it was great that players of all past quiz bowl histories could take part in the tournament. I think the tournament was very effective as an introduction to quiz bowl for new pla...

Re: EFT at Claremont Colleges (10/3)
On that note, depending on how many teams we have, we might ask some of our UCSD players to staff and not play even though they are freshman this year. If you have four eager freshmen, you might do similarly, and maybe she can sit this one out. Though if you have 2, then ask Andrew by all means.

In a similar example, we won a game at this SCT by timing out the bonus to ensure a victory by +10 or something else close. I, and the rest of Caltech, would prefer Saturday-Sunday. Barring that Fri-Sat is OK. I don't have the stamina to play 12+ quiz bowl hours in a day, and we have to fly out Friday night no matter what to get from the West coast in time, and we would still probably leave Sunday night either way.

Running 14 rounds from 9-6 (after waiting a half hour for all the teams to show up, and reseeding) with a nice lunch break seemed pretty good. And none of the moderators were game-breakingly bad. The astrodome was a total hose, but maybe I missed some sports clue.
There were lots of questions with LaGrange or a permutation as answers (at least 4).
"The bombing of libya" was a shitty answer - we all sat there trying to think of an operation name, and missed it.

I searched and scrolled and couldn't find it. We've started our packet, because the 2 month deadline is presumably close. Also we'd like to know where the West will be held, in case we have to travel northwards. Correct my mistaken assumptions!
