Re: HSAPQ Questions

I don't like them. I read them at Vandy and found them awkard and pretentious. But there are those who love them; I don't know why. But they are still better than most questions that are written in house. I think you will be fine at your tournament. And we all need to remember that if the question i...

Re: Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl (11/22/08)

Another thanks for a well run tournament. (And thanks for finding me a place to make hot tea for my cold.) I think you did a great job of editing the questions. In fact, I was surprised when I picked up my copy and saw that they were HSAPQ questions. I find their questions ungrammatical and unnecces...

Re: Non-question-specific criticisms of IS-80A

I don't think that NAQT needs to write all of it's questions, particularly A series questions, based on what the top four (or eight or ten) teams in the country would do. These is a whole lot of quiz bowl out there that is having a good time and learning a lot and will never win NAQT. That is what A...

Re: Vanderbilt ABC XXXVI - Oct 31-Nov 1, 2008

I disagree somewhat about the quality of the questions. I was a reader for s few rounds. There were typos and incorrect information in some instances, making them difficult to read. And the syntax, or lack there of, in the sentences made them difficult to read and to understand. There were repeated ...

Re: Fellow Teachers, please respond if you can help:

I only have a BA and my AP courses have high pass rates. And I have graded the exams. Go to the College board website and there is much info there. And the syllabus approval process is totally bogus. They denied the syllabus of more than one teacher on their developement committees. I am fairly sure...

Re: A list of things to never do when running tournaments

Keep it small your first year. (and maybe forever) Also, used store bought questions the first year from NAQT or some where else. You will make yourself crazy writing them. Or buy some questions and add a work sheet written by your players, if you want them to have the experience. Google "round...

Re: How Often/When Does Your Team Practice?

That was nice, but he had so many packets (among lots of other stuff) that it was hard to keep track of what had already been read recently. Question question question-- "We've already heard that!" many times in a row. I put the date on the packet when I read and then dump it in a file to...

One of those D schools (Dorman, Danville, Dunbar. el al) had a cool system at Vandy and/or UTC last year that made a very cool sound as it turned on. It was also expandable to include extra teams. I wrote the name down somewhere, but can't find it.

April 12 will cut down on TN schools becuase the state Latin convention is that weekend. And many of your TN teams are also Latin scholars.
I like the idea of starting earlier on Friday, particularly for the little ones.

You can continue to flip one of MLK teams from varsity to JV and vice versa. Most of mine are 10th and below so I can do whatever.

Last month I made a moderator cry when I asked her to quit counting down the time on the bonus questions out loud. Also, instead of "Answer, please", she usually bellows "SPEEEEEEEEEEEAK!" Another time when we had to stay in the room until released after a round when my JV team h...

Alabama teams are having troubles with local school boards about travel out of state. God forbid that anyone should discover that there are very intelligent people in Alabama.

It remains to be seen. Is Ryan also playing for UT and coming to this thing? Hey, Vandyhawk: What's the rule on noise makers and cheers from the crowd? Is there a height limit on pyramids that our cheerleaders do? I think we can go up at least three levels in that atrium of Buttrick. We have lots of...

Oh honey, I'm a native Nashvillian. I've been finding my way around Vandy since before you were born. Some of my former high school players (I suspect the Greek myth guy) are now playing for UT so I thought I might come and watch a round or two before I get heavy into laundry on Sat. 'Tis an excitin...

When and where will this be played? I'm assuming Wilson Hall. I may come see some of the college rounds and some of my former high school players will be there.
