Re: JV tournament at Maggie Walker: April 26, 2008

As for the brackets, we didn't know enough about a lot of the teams to completely balance them. Dr. Barnes had wanted to switch you with St. Gertrude, but Palmer (who made the schedules) was not aware of the reasoning behind that and thus decided no change was warranted. In light of both that and y...

Re: JV tournament at Maggie Walker: April 26, 2008

Thank you to all teams for coming. From my angle the tournament seemed to run okay. Prelim results have been posted: http://www.geocities.com/mlwgsbob/HAVOC/havocwebstats_standings.html The one game finals was between bracket winners Collegiate A and Freeman. Freeman won the game and the tournament....

On a more positive note about the questions: The absence of math calculation was much appreciated. Please let TJ and GSAC not be the only house written tournaments to make this change.

Sorry for the stats delay. This was my fault for not getting the stats on my flash drive the night of the tournament. We have most of them up on this page now. Particularly, I don't yet have the information about 5th through 8th place. Anant probably has this though. EDIT: As you probably already kn...

If you hadn't noticed from the web page before the tournament, you probably realized now that this tournament had math questions, but no computation questions. How did people like this change? It's one I hope will be mimicked in other tournaments. There is one thing I would like to apologize for: th...

Not a good day for us. I was sick, and the rest of the team didn't seem to be on their game today either, except Greg.

The most remarkable thing I see on the stats is TJ A's negging. Minimum of 4 negs per game, one game with 10, all players with at least 6. Is this abnormal, or is this your strategy?

Time was not the thing preventing 10 rounds. Logistics, as in available moderators, was the problem.

Even so, the card system would have a lot of advantages.

The questions appeared to be better made in terms of difficulty. The first few rounds were like last year's questions, with games between top teams featuring tons of powers and buzzer races. That's probably okay though; as NAQT said, they do need to cater to teams not in this area. But come round 7 ...

Likewise, I missed PACE for a math camp. :P However, I'm in Nebraska, so not much in way of location humor. Actually, Nebraska just kind of stinks in general. Hooray for MW A winning and avenging their only HSNCT loss in this year's PAC finals. Also good job to MW B for coming from behind as a #7 to...

Consolation: That is quite possibly the greatest system of naming brackets that we'll ever see. Who came up with that? Looks like Stuyvestant will get another chance to show their stuff after they maybe didn't live up to their potential at NAQT. Maybe they'll do a repeat of their win over MW like at...

This year's card system and the standard bracketing system have no technical difference, only a logistical one. As a team that made an upset in the first round, I can attest that Byko's example situation sort of happened to us this year as well. There was no real change.

MW is a little bit of an enigma as they are graduating their full A team but they are another team that can never be counted out. I'll let you figure out the details yourself next year, but the facts are that we're losing all of our top 4 (who each tower over the rest of our team) and two other mem...

In VHSL competition (which admittedly has questions much less pyramidal) Freeman, who managed to beat a nearly full-strength MW A in an NAQT match this year, narrowly lost to our B team - who we sent to VHSL regionals while our A team cleaned up at Gonzaga. The very next game their opponent, who we ...

I'm going to agree with the above poster about needing more time, if you're going to have questions like factoring 4th degree polynomials with complex roots (2005). I had a lot of fun trying to do that as a freshman. :(

NAQT's distribution was skewed towards a particular category this time. Won't say which so as not to help teams that haven't played this set, but being a weakness of mine I got a bit annoyed. Worse was that in about 5 out of 11 rounds, a math question began when the clock read less than 10 seconds, ...

The error is caused by the fact that one of your players, who had 40 points in all of the other 8 games, is listed as earning 90 points that game. If I had to guess, a slip of the finger typed a 9 instead of a 0. The program thus thinks you got all 9 more bonuses and 90 less bonus points than is act...

A job well done running this tournament, but no less to be expected from Dr. Chuck, of course. Personally, I was quite dismayed at our...

Well plus NAQT games are just prone to flukes a lot since it's more speed than knowledge based. Is that really what you believe? Whether the extra 16 teams in the prelims requires more than 12 prelim rounds to guarantee 10 games I can't say, as the whole card system is quite baffling to me (ask a math person like Palmer). Freeman is a dangerous team. They are a little inconsistent. But, when they are firing on all cylinders they are capable of beating just about anyone. It all depends on the packet that is read. That game was certainly a quality win for Freeman, as was their victory over Walter Johnson at W&M. I...

Later rounds seemed to have better quality questions, but almost all of the rounds seemed to suffer from imbalanced distributions in categories. This was proposed as cont...

Chattahoochee was in consolation and got 8th. They actually beat Dorman B in the consolation round robin, but then lost to Maggie Walker B probably due to exhaustion (they were a little slow on the buzzer that game). Quick results overview, I'm sure the TDs will have a more complete list later. Maggie Walker A went 12-0 for the day getting first (all other teams got at least 3 losses), and Dorman B won consolation (7th). I do have to say this NAQT IS set was full of very strange questions.
