Re: Illinois '08-'09
I think it is the Downers North coach ... at least she did question/moderator control as of 2 or 3 years ago. However, her name escapes me now.

Re: Illinois '08-'09
On the subject of schools, anyone know if any new teams will be joining our legion of 500 this year? Have we made any inroads into the vast wasteland know as Chicago (Latin & St. Ignatius excluded of course)? Something else I'll throw out to my more experienced brethren... For the last two year...

Though, we are only two-three years removed from Joliet being one of the eight best teams in the state, and no, I am not letting that drop, and no I am not getting over it. ... I personally am angrier about the Downers South/Hinsdale Central combo from state 06 and 07. To not only beat both teams i...

Hey ... I know this is a bit off-topic but I was wondering if anybody knew where GG was headed to college. He sat in on my math class at UChi, and I was wondering if anybody knows which school he decided on. Congrats to team Illinois! On to real quiz bowl. Can't say much about anywhere else, but I d...

Re: Illinois '07-'08
Football coaches will never run good quizbowl. They don't know anything about the activity, and they don't want to. To the extent that they understand it's something involving academics and knowledge, they hate you for being "nerds," and want you to do things more like football (ultimatel...

How many more negs does Auburn have than Greg? Ouch, John. That hurts. Hey ... Negs don't matter if you get more TU's than the other guys. Besides, my neg record is as bad as anybody's. I have more stupid negs in crunch situations than anybody else I've ever played against. Trust me. Really stupid ...

Re: Illinois '07-'08
This is also why the WSC will rarely, if ever, produce a state title contender henceforth: the coaches care more about an extra half hour of primetime TV than good question quality. <\rant> ... And I wouldn't stick my nose up at any team with a 24-1 record ...... if OPRF wins this sectional, they a...

West Suburban Conference. In fact, we switched from a decently good, almost pyramidal question provider after my sophomore year. The coaches said that the old questions were "too long" and they were tired of getting back so late. Which makes it a rather dubious distinction for Avery that w...

One of the biggest: what do you say to the team that strictly plays within their conference and then demands high seeding because they are 10-0. If that team only plays in their conference and goes 10-0, they rack up points for winning conference. Other teams are racking up points for 3, 4, or 5 to...

OPRF and Lake Forest above Loyola? Is there something I'm missing? As far as I know, OPRF has only lost one match this year, to Fenwick at the IHSSBCA kickoff Of course, their other matches have been: 10-0 in WSC competition (a conference we spent the last two years pummelling) victory at Fenton tu...

Coaches get together and examine record, stregnth of schedule, PPG, etc to evaluate the best 32 teams in the state. Any coach whose team wishes to be considered must be present at the meeting. At the actual state tournament, the teams are grouped into 4 groups of 8: group 1: seeds 1,8,9,16,17,24,25...

The problem: Given my experience with how coaches cast ballots, I'm not sure this would solve anything either! I worry, equally, that too many Chicago area coaches do not give proper respect to downstate teams, andin just as much, there are downstate coaches that would vote a slate of weaker local ...

In all fairness to the IHSA, they have never considered the state tournament as one that crowns the best team in the state--though that often is the case, even given the fact that competitive teams dominate Regions 2 and 3 and have to fight their way to the championship. If the IHSA state champions...

class AA is pretty much as I would have called it, with the exception of Hinsdale Central. They weren't even one of the top teams in our conference. The fact that one of either Maine South or New Trier isn't going to Peoria already sees the state finals losing credibility. Make that five of either Maine South, Maine East, New Trier, Fenwick, OPRF, and St. Ignatius. What kills me is that at least two of those teams won't even make it to SECTIONA...

So, my opinions on recent debate: As to the A-team, B-team issue. My personal opinion is that a team's A-team is the five players, when played in conjunction, which give that team the best chance at victory, should constitute an A-team. If a team's two best players are both math specialists, then I ...
