Okay, guys--
Are there ways to make the tournament run smoother and faster? Are some of the problems we encountered preventable?
Let's gather some thoughts to make the next tournament better.
Thanks.

I had several problems with EFT (the UCLA version), including the endless delays and unexpected room lockouts. But the most blatant blunder is the editing , considering the set we heard wasn't being played for the first time. What were the editors doing after last weekend's EFT? Here are other probl...

Actually, it's Academic Decathlon. At some schools, it's the same coach for both. At other schools, different coaches fight over the same kids for practice time. The local TV stations aren't helping, either. I've tried for years to get TV news coverage on quiz bowl events, but all you see are segmen...

The team that surprised me the most last year was University (Irvine). It has quite a gene pool to draw from, but it hasn't been active in quiz bowl until they got a coach last year. I wonder how magnet schools like Whitney and Oxford will fare in quiz bowl. All my previous attempts at contacting th...

Over here in Southern California, we've always tried to give teams as many rounds as possible (we charge $100+ per team). The most we've ever had was 15 rounds of round-robin, and we got out by 6 PM. Although sometimes the field didn't have an ideal number (17 is a horrible number), most players see...

For all ye people who weren't there... Stanford didn't show up (there was probably a breakdown in communication), so instead of everybody having three bye rounds, we decided to split the UCI house team (plus two free agents) into three teams. That way we had a full triple round robin without byes. H...

I don't mind having the tournament up north, and most likely UCI will send two teams. But I'd have to request the event be held back a week to August 11-12. I personally cannot leave Southern California the weekend of August 4-5 due to a prior obligation. Can whoever's running the event please post ...

Re: This Tournament Goes to Eleven - 9/21 and 9/22
Do other people have other definitions of what constitutes science biography or literature biography? Are we science majors writing crappy literature/literature biography questions? Inquiring minds want to know. -Seth Seth: I'm not saying _you_ write poor packets. In fact, the best EFT packets came...

Coram Bryant and Benjamin (?) were on Kevin's team at Aztlan Cup last year. I'm not sure if either is still a student there, though. Also, the 2005 NAQT Sectionals at USC featured a UCSD D2 team; presumably some of those people are third and fourth years now. . Coram coaches San Dieguito Academy's ...

My suggestion is to get a bunch of your friends and start a club at UCSD with your school's Dean of Students. You can get access to school facilities and possibly some funding. Once your club is registered, it'll be easier to post signs and advertise. I don't imagine UCSD as a mostly commuter school...

Note: This was split from here . Admin ... On the flip side, the jazz packet made me want to throw babies. Not to mention that entire math and physics packets are just dull even if there was an amazing Konigsburg Bridge question. Andrew--You should be glad I didn't contribute a packet on classical ...

What, nobody could understand what I was saying? Eric Smith seemed to do just fine hearing my words because he owned everything in my room. I do agree that next time I need to find a more balanced scheduling procedure. Yan--you are by _far_ the most cogent moderator at Technophobia. You alone accom...

Jordan: I thought most of the questions were insightful and well written. There was plenty of variety and subject-matter diversity among the tossups. It is evident that you got many unique voices on the writing staff. If people compare these sets to EFT, you might find that PARFAIT questions were ha...

keep things moving along
Hey, Dwight:
Nice tournament! A small suggestion for moving the tournament along more quickly--rather than fielding home team(s?), how about having two staff members per room and have a statistician keep live running stats instead of making people wait at the end of the day?
Willie

Question Distribution
Were the packets randomly distributed using a computer program or were they done by hand?
