I eagerly await that thread.Magister Ludi wrote:(As an aside, people should stop writing questions on Harold Bloom because he is a mediocre critic who has managed his career so that he happens to be famous. He is kind of like the Ken Jennings of literary criticism, but thats an issue for another thread)

Re: Miscellaneous and Cross-disciplinary questions
What about the reasons I presented that have to do with the way that these questions--from a competitive standpoint--cause the distribution of rounds to be variable in yet another way beyond the editors' control? I really liked your post, which seemed like a good constructive start at discussing ac...

Re: Miscellaneous and Cross-disciplinary questions
Why do we need the Comedy Central clue there? I've put almost no input into the NAQT distribution, but I imagine the official answer is "Because we believe our audience, in general, likes pop-culture material in about the proportion we currently include it." And we extend that philosophy ...

Re: Miscellaneous and Cross-disciplinary questions
My argument is not circular in any sense. It's about differentiating, to the extent possible, between legitimate academic topics and things that are not so. To reprise my ridiculous example that I never thought anyone would defend, to answer a question on various Stellas in literature, one has to b...

Re: Miscellaneous and Cross-disciplinary questions
I think you are wrong. Is Charlie voicing a widespread opinion? Are there lots of players who, independently of what they think about pop culture in the NAQT distribution, think that mixing academic and non-academic material in the same question is an inherently bad idea for different reasons? What...

Re: Miscellaneous and Cross-disciplinary questions
I currently edit stuff in NAQT's popular "mixed" (i.e. miscellaneous) category, so I appreciate the feedback. I'll keep an eye on this thread, so please comment away. It's a tricky category to edit, for obvious reasons, so your notes are helpful. I edited most of the questions referred to ...

Similarly, NAQT correctness rule B.5, which I quote below: If an underlined section includes a generic word (e.g., "war" in Korean War) and that generic word appears in the question itself, then a player need not repeat that word if he or she is answering after it has been read seems to m...

I don't really like either of those tossups, because both seem like easy powers for teams that know what they are (I hear that Guatemalan authors would write about issues for bannana farmers and that Portugal had a King named Sebastian), but not gettable at all for people who don't know what they a...

My kneejerk answer on lit, mainly the American lit, is that a lot of it was too hard That was part of our post-mortem analysis as well: much lit appears at NCT not because someone thought it would make a great NCT question, but because it was a submitted question that was clearly too hard for an IS...

the three mentioned game-deciding errors (Breughels, Brahma/Brahman, waiting too long on a buzz) essentially screwed up the tournament once it was down to the final four. I will say that the Izanami question was not very good (the "died giving birth to the god of fire" lead-in is a mid-level clue at even a Regionals-level tournament; I won't debate whether it should still be power, but it should definitely not be the first clue). Also the Coatlicue questio...

Re: 2009 ICT discussion
I think this is terrible reasoning to outright classify questions. I'm pretty sure NAQT has no policy of using Pulitzer Prizes to classify its literature questions. I was just pointing out an obvious counter-argument to the possible argument that Advise and Consent shouldn't fill a lit distribution...

While this is true, I do wonder if dropping Ken's name (provided he would be ok with such a thing) would be a useful marketing ploy... I'd be willing, but I'm not optimistic that it would work very well as marketing. Even back in 2004, when I was getting asked about quiz bowl in national interviews...

Since your stated principles of what makes a good question seem solid, my conclusion is that you should do more ed...
