2023 ACF Fall Discussion

This is the discussion thread for 2023 ACF Fall. In addition to asking for feedback, I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in producing and playing the set, starting with the many tournament directors and staffers who went out of their way this weekend. Their extra work in implementing MODAQ for...

Of the many Florida players worthy of this thread’s appreciation/gratitude/praise/etc., here are some of the ones that stand out in my brain’s highlight reel: The FSU squad ( Robert , Tad , Nick , Sam and others whose names live in the hilly Panhandle part of my mind I haven’t visited in a while) --...

Re: 2022 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

Can I see the science tossup on dynamo theory and the geo(maybe ss/anthropology?) tossup on pastoralism in Africa? 14. Vaĭnshteĭn and Zel’dovich modeled these systems using cycles of stretching, twisting, and folding. The intensity and shape of a phenomenon (emphasize) generated by one of these sys...

Re: Specific Questions

While biographically-inspired literature questions are not a novel idea, I thought that the tossup on Oe’s son and the bonus on Heaney’s brother were especially well done. The latter stands out more to me because the bonus did a surprisingly good job at incorporating a core theme from Death of a Nat...

I negged on the Sistine Madonna tossup in round 2 with Lamentation of Christ, mistaking an article I read on Holbein's Dead Christ with Mantegna's painting. Here's an article that references Dostoyevsky standing on a chair to view Holbein's Dead Christ (I think I first read a different article a whi...

Here’s this. There was a geo thread somewhere, but I couldn’t find it. Pretty sure NAQT geo editor commented on that thread, among other people. I think that was recent, though maybe not.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement

I agree with all of the comments above. I appreciated the rigor of the set, especially considering how difficult it must have been to find pop culture common links for academic answer lines. Overall, it was a fun way to encourage a broad range of knowledge on canonical academic answer lines, just as...

Re: MOQBA Novice Mirror Hosted by Stony Brook (1/9/21)

Teams cannot have won 3 or more high school tournaments (at any level) in a school year and cannot have scored 50+ ppg at a novice tournament, 30+ ppg at a regs tournament, or 10+ ppg at a nats tournament. Teams can ask for the tournament director to grant exceptions. Do you mean for the 50/30/10 p...

Re: Wider camera requirements for online quiz bowl

So far cheating allegations have been more of an issue at the collegiate level, so that's definitely where the most attention needs to be--I only referred to AQBL because that was an organization that would be conducting a lot of online mirrors that I could name off the top of my head, though perhap...

Re: Wider camera requirements for online quiz bowl

I'm in general in favor of an approach like this for "serious" tournaments. It's a relatively low barrier to entry and will make a lot of cheating more difficult. Of course, in practice it's going to be hard to get through to people that you need to do this setup and stick with it through...

Is this for college or high school teams? I don’t think it was clearly posted on this thread or the original RAFT II thread, but I’m assuming it’s a high school set since there’s a middle school mirror reserved on the main thread for RAFT II. I don’t know how to add a hyperlink on these posts, but ...

1) Good catch. 2) To clarify: do the new to quiz bowl discounts stack? Trying to determine if the base price for a UNF team would be $50 or $60. Edit: reading this back I'm going to assume it's $60--stacking discounts within the "new to quizbowl" category would be needlessly confusing. I'm...
