Re: THE ISLAND CUP III RETURNS IN-PERSON (LI/NY/NJ/CT) [NO REGION RESTRICTIONS]

To follow up on Conor's post and to clarify my own: Conor's description of the events was how I understood them, not that Joe personally participated in transphobia but that his response to it was inadequate. I will reiterate that this, in my view, constitues a major problem

Re: THE ISLAND CUP III RETURNS IN-PERSON (LI/NY/NJ/CT) [NO REGION RESTRICTIONS]

"PACE will recognize tournaments as Gold qualifiers which meet the following criteria... - is not known to have had major problems in the recent past." Removing a question from a tournament because of your political inclinations seems to me a paradigmatic example of a "major problem&q...

Re: Supervision of High Schools Teams at Tournaments

Somewhat tangential but closely related to this issue is the importance of having an adult contact for high school quizbowl orgs. Recently, I know I and others have been frustrated with trying to deal with misconduct issues from a certain high school. It has been frustrating because the only way we ...

Re: Supervision of High Schools Teams at Tournaments

Thank you for moving this discussion to the forums, Em. In-person teams need to have adult supervisors, in my view. There is substantial risk of predation or assault when high schoolers travel alone. Other extracurricular organizations have strict requirements on adult supervision and we should embr...

Buzzers for Online Tournaments

I wanted to start a dialogue on how we can improve online tournaments, specifically the buzzer system. One issue in particular of Discord buzzing is latency. During ACF Winter, there were a number of occasions wherein I buzzed seconds before my buzz was sent to the Discord chat. Obviously, in buzzer...

Re: 2020 ACF Winter - General Discussion and Thanks

I played this set with Oliver Wu, a freshman playing his first college tournament. He had a lot of fun playing this set and said it was a great experience. For my own part, I thought the difficulty was great and questions interesting. My only criticism would be of the space toss-up, which I also tho...

Re: Should Baby Seals Smile While Being Clubbed? Or: Why Should Newer Teams Stick Around College Quizbowl?

More online guides are probably not going to be very helpful compared to having real-life mentors and motivators. Having a hands-on mentor was critical for me to be motivated to improve my game. I easily put in 20+ hours a week (more before a tournament) into Quizbowl. Some of that is because I lov...

Re: Should Baby Seals Smile While Being Clubbed? Or: Why Should Newer Teams Stick Around College Quizbowl?

As one of the people leading a very young team, I think I have some unique insight on this. For context, the current OU quizbowl team is run by three sophomores. While we had support in Finn Bender and Thatcher Chonka last year, this year we're on our own. This seal has been through some drubbings. ...
