Re: On HS Teams Without Coaches

As far as I'm aware, nobody has done anything of the sort (other New England people, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong); just speaking for myself, it never occured to me that that was a thing that we could do, since the coach wasn't at most tournaments, and I didn't have a lot of confidence that...

Re: Y'all need to pay attention to your own community

I’d also like to address the incredibly tired statement of “men need to start speaking up when they witness this kind of behavior.” It has been made abundantly clear to me that many adult members of the quizbowl community cannot identify bad behavior in themselves or their friends. Like I said abov...

Men: start calling out other men for this behavior. Call out your teammates, call out players from other schools, call out players in tournaments that you're staffing, and so on. Don't partake in the behavior, don't laugh at it, don't ignore it, and don't dismiss it as "not a big deal" or ...

Don’t make fun of people for not knowing things. This is especially true if you’re an adult staffer at a high school or middle school tournament. I'm far from a literature specialist, but poems, short stories, and novellas are a significant chunk of the literature canon and are relatively easier to read in a short amount of time. As long as the names of movements are unique, those can also be acceptable clues. A clue about a first movement marked "Allegro affettuoso" will almost certainly point to Schumann's Op. 54.
