Re: Quizbowl questions and trans people

From one trans woman to another: thank you so much for this thoughtful, considerate and intellectually generous reply! I agree that this balance isn't easy at all. Just as you say, transphobia is sadly a prominent part of our lives and history, and cluing this in some questions is important (besides...

Quizbowl questions and trans people

**Major content warning for transphobia and direct quotation of hateful myths about trans people** Generally, it's been very pleasing to see increasing discussion of transgender issues in quizbowl questions. I personally am also heartened to see trans representation that does not focus on oppressio...

Re: 2022 ACF Regionals - General Discussion and Thanks

I had the pleasure of editing world literature and linguistics (within SS) for this tournament. Being a British (ex-Oxford) Quizbowl player means that I have occasional blind spots with core US-canonical subjects, as well as a high probability of being tactically asleep during crises due to being in...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

I absolutely adored the tossup on Antigone in packet N, which seemed to be themed around postcolonial adaptations of the play (at least for the early clues). This picks up on the approach to the early clues in the Lysistrata tossup from Regionals 2020 (B.1), which clued its 20th century performance ...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals Invitational (1/30/2021)

I partly just want to echo my team-mate's words in the post above - the efficiency was immensely beneficial for our sleep schedule, and we appreciated it. We were very impressed by the moderating team, who set a high standard of professionalism and efficiency without letting that make them snappy or...

Re: 2021 ACF Nationals Qualifier

As a member of a UK-based team (although I can't believe we're the only ones facing these types of issues), I would need to know what allowances will be made for variation between the team that plays at the qualifier and the actual team fielded at Nationals. Given the logistical difficulties of flyi...

Hey - apologies, I only just joined the closed discussion group and spotted this post.

We (Oxford) would be interested - are we too late?

Re: 2020 ACF Winter - Specific Question Discussion

Also, bonus C.12 appeared to be primarily themed around rape in ancient Rome. To me this is a surprising and, honestly, dubious choice so I'm curious--what was the process that led to its inclusion? Was this a considered decision, or an oversight, or something else? Agreed re bonus C.12 - especiall...

Re: ACF Fall 2020 - Specific Question Discussion

Can't speak to what the lit editor may have intended when editing this tossup, but Life is a Dream and Fuenteovejuna may have been cut from the tossup because the editor wanted to make the tossup more thematically coherent, i.e. specific to one period of Spanish drama, rather than any issue with di...

Re: A Statement on Stony Brook Quiz Bowl

The first tournament I TDed was a small end-of-semester open, with 6 teams (all made up of very experienced players) taking part. While modding the final, I made a mistake (allowing a team far, far too long to pull a bonus part, without timing properly) which ultimately swung the match result (a 240...

Re: Oxford Open Online Mirror - Saturday 27th June

Always asking for directed answers is nice in theory, but it really wears you down when literally no answer is being taken without being explicitly directed. I was overall happy with the moderating at the tournament, but there's no reason it couldn't be improved at future events. As one of the mode...

This looks absolutely delightful, and I'm looking forward to it very much. There will very likely be considerable interest in mirroring this in the UK.

Re: 2020 ACF Regionals: Specific Questions and Errata

Considerable confusion was caused at the British site by mentioning the "Canterbury Plain" as a clue on the Stonehenge bonus part. Stonehenge is located on the Salisbury Plain.

(On a sidenote, does anyone know when the packets will be available online?)
