Re: RAFT III (2021 - 22)

On quizbowlpackets.com, the link to Packet 5 current redirects to Packet 7, making the actual Packet 5 inaccessible.

Re: Scobol Solo November 16, 2019 (IL)

I negged tossup 49. The point total through 50 is correct, though (I ended with 8).

Re: Scobol Solo November 16, 2019 (IL)

I may not have been the first to notice this, but it seems that Sumesh Sundaresan from Metea Valley has lost two of his games, and Archan Das of IMSA may have found them.

Re: 2019-2020 Illinois Discussion

Anybody have predictions about Scobol Solo in a couple weeks? People who might make finals in order of the field list here (and erring on the side of including more, not fewer players): Arjun Nageswaran Govind Prabhakar Justin Abel Abraham Holtermann Liam Starnes Roxanne Tang John Paul Taylor Me (?)...

Re: 2019-2020 Illinois Discussion

I appreciate your confidence in my abilities. We'll have to see whether it is well-placed. I'm quite interested in Latin's results. Tejas put up good stats last year, and it's unclear how much he was shadowed by Matt and Chetan. If he worked as hard this summer as he did the last, he could emerge as...

Re: 2019 Masonic/Reinstein Set Discussion

Quietly resurrecting this thread to note that Extra Question 4 of Packet #1 is probably harder than any of the other lit questions mentioned here. The only hits I got on Quizdb for Marilynne Robinson as an answerline were a CO tossup and a hard part of an EFT bonus.

Re: 2019 Masonic/Reinstein Set Discussion

A total score for both teams below 320 in this format is a bad match, and it's my fault when that happens more than once or twice, which it did. Honestly I think it's more the fault of the Masonic Class system than the packets. In particular, 1A schools are just so small that none of them are reall...

Re: 2019 Masonic/Reinstein Set Discussion

To be honest I enjoyed the NYT v Sullivan tossup. It was a little bit strange to hear "Topic: Miscellaneous" followed by "This court case," but it makes sense with the topics you were given, and I certainly agree it's preferable to make the Miscellaneous a little less trashy (as ...

Re: 2019 Masonic/Reinstein Set Discussion

I agree here with Dylan on pretty much all points, especially that literature was a bit too tough at times. While most of the Miscellaneous category was well executed, choosing W-2 as an answerline was somewhat frustrating. In my room at least it seemed like by the second or third line pretty much e...

Re: 2019 Masonic/Reinstein Set Discussion

Honestly, I thought the set was quite good. It seemed a little easier than last year's to me, but this may be just due to our team being better this year. On the tossups I enjoyed some of the tougher clues while keeping to reasonably canonical answerlines. Every once in a while there was a pair of t...

Re: Set Discussion

Could I see the "islands" tossup from (I believe) Round 2? I heard "barrier" and reflex-buzzed with "reefs." I was somewhat confused when later in the question I think it mentioned the "coral" type of these things, which to me still indicated reefs. I don't re...

Upper/Competitive Divisions

A few times at different tournaments, our team has been asked to join "Upper" or "Competitive" Divisions. Generally if we stay in the Lower Division we're usually in the top 10-ish, but entering a competitive division will most likely place us at the bottom. I understand that usi...

Re: Staying Alert/Focused after Lunch

Got it. You're right, I sometimes overestimate other factors and underestimate simply which questions are asked and which aren't.
Thanks for all the input everybody!

Re: Staying Alert/Focused after Lunch

This sort of makes me wonder: what are you and your teammates eating/drinking for lunch? Generally we've had pizza... Maybe we just need to change our lunch choice? Also: if you are playing well before the break, chances are decent that you are facing relatively stronger opponents after the break t...

Staying Alert/Focused after Lunch

This may or may not be the correct place for this post, so please feel free to move it to a better board. Our team is in a tough spot: we are better than many teams in our area, but we haven't made it to the point where we can beat the best teams. One of our biggest problems is... Lunch. At tourname...
