Re: Minnesota 2020-21
Last Saturday on the 21st, the middle school circuit finally kicked off with the NAMESAKE tournament. I had the honor of coaching Eden Prairie Central Middle School's first quiz bowl team in five years. We went 2-3. The team that won it all, with a 7-0 record and 21PPB, was Spectrum A. We lost to th...

Re: 2020 ACF Winter - General Discussion and Thanks
https://i.imgur.com/48bCgxt.png For some reason, I decided to make a density chart of three tournaments' PPBs that all should roughly have been similar in difficulty -- this tournament, LIT, and EFT 2019. From the looks of it, it's clear to me that this tournament's bonuses were slightly easier tha...

Re: Trash Questions in College Sets
So I don't particularly have a strong stake in this conversation, but this bit right here made me think of something: plenty of college classes discuss pop culture that touches on societally relevant themes that may not be so relevant in a few years. The canon of quizbowl is supposed to reflect topi...

Re: Keeping Score During Practices
I would say that it depends on how your kids feel about it. One potential danger with keeping detailed stats is that players will become too fixated on their own individual performance. This can mean either becoming too reluctant to buzz (which is what you said), vulching, or comparing their score t...

Unfortunately, due to Ben's absence and many others due to SciOly, I think Saturday State will be a bit more disappointing in terms of field.BenWeiner27 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2020 10:56 am I look forward to seeing what happens at NAQT State even though I cannot personally attend the tournament.

Re: How to build "stamina"
I'm a freshman currently and I've found it very beneficial to just be constantly thinking between matches, before and after matches and at lunches. I usually talk to my teammates about our performances and comments about it. This is interesting to me, since my intuition would tell me that I should ...

The podcast team (Shardul Rao, Brian Lin, Ben Weiner) has concluded their midseason poll, and the results are now in: 1. Wayzata A: 147 points (High: 1, Low: 2) 2. Mounds View A: 138 points (High: 1, Low: 2) 3. Wayzata B: 119 points (High: 3, Low: 4) 4. Eden Prairie A: 106 points (High: 3, Low: 4) 5...

Re: How to build "stamina"
I'm going to post to this thread once again because on November 2nd at the Mounds View Invitational, instead of ordering pizza, I brought black bean chili and an apple for lunch. Having that meal, combined with toast and cottage cheese for breakfast, meant that I felt great during playoffs—better th...

Re: Minnesota '19-'20
The RAFT mirror at Mounds View happened! Eden Prairie B won in a final against Wayzata A/C, with EP A in 3rd and Irondale A in 4th. I think the Mounds View team did a very brave thing by hosting an mACF tournament in an NAQT-dominated area, and though the tournament had some hiccups, I'd still say t...

A while ago, I did outreach work for PACE collecting contact info from Quiz Bowl and Knowledge Bowl coaches around the state. Out of my own curiosity, I decided to plot the schools that did QB vs KB on a map: https://imgur.com/a/ru1RWtR The yellow is Knowledge Bowl, the blue is Quiz Bowl. The only s...

Re: Minnesota '19-'20
I figured it might be reasonably helpful to figure out which of the top teams (Wayzata A + B, Eden Prairie, Mounds View) as well as teams that may surprise us (Irondale, Burnsville, Mounds Park) are playing when. So, I've put together an extremely speculative list of who's gonna be attending the maj...

On the proper method to stop negging so much, 2019 edition
A few days ago, I was at a practice, and a tossup mentioning a material and a bunch of sculptures come up. I'm paraphrasing here, but the tossup ended like "...for 10 points, what metal has chromium added to it to make it-" When I heard that, I positively knew that the answer was steel bec...

Mounds View: The team that will most likely challenge Wayzata's reign as the team to beat in MN is Mounds View. Shardul Rao will likely be the best generalist in the state, but he will need help from Max and Aryan if Mounds View is to win more than a couple tournaments this year. Do not be surprise...

I don't think that there'll be enough non-NAQT events to warrant a "Schedule" thread, but I figured a "things happening" might be good. This is a thread where I hope that us Minnesotans can post about major events that happen throughout the season, mostly tournaments. This is als...

My school finished 31st at HSNCT and I don't know how to feel
I am on Eden Prairie High School's C team. Eden Prairie High School is in Minnesota and sent 4 teams to HSNCT. Its A team finished 31st. As far as I know, that's pretty good for a random school that isn't talked about often. Groger Ranks put us at 73rd for pre-HSNCT and HSQBRank put us at 145th for ...

How to build "stamina"
I recently had the opportunity to play in MN state (congrats Wayzata A), which was a 12 team round robin with 6 games in the morning and 5 games in the afternoon. While that might not seem out of the ordinary, I'm used to only playing stretches of about 3-4 games and having a break afterward. So, I ...

Getting involved with the online quiz bowl community
