NC Novice and Outreach Tournament- November 14 (online but in NC only)
What is this tournament? This is a tournament meant for novice players and schools with limited quiz bowl experience in the state of North Carolina. It will occur on November 14, and be run online using the Discord platform. Students must have some ability to connect to Discord for the purposes of ...

Re: 2020-2021 NC Discussion
All right so I guess I better post in this thread so there's some actual discussion. NC's definitely very up in the air for next year- there are lots of teams that could be very good. I'm not going to do a traditional team-by-team summary because of all the uncertainty. Instead, I'll just talk about...

Re: On HS Teams Without Coaches
In at least some cases, teams that attend tournaments without a coach/advisor have made attempts to find a teacher who is willing to advise them in some capacity. This is an abbreviated version of longer happenings, but in my school's case, a few times, our normal advisor was not able to do various ...

Re: [TW: Sexual Harassment] Harassment in the THAT Online Quizbowl Discord
I'd strongly encourage all outreach e-mails to schools to include information about the misconduct form and codes of conduct for quiz bowl. The PACE newsletter right now does not contain a link to the misconduct form as far as I can tell. If we want programs that might not be very plugged into the c...

Re: On the Abundance of High School Sets During the Pandemic [And Its Problems]
If what the online quiz bowl scene looks like next season is similar to what it looked like this season, most sets will be having only one online mirror (or maybe a few, but not as many as they would in a normal environment). As such, the surplus of sets will be less of a problem if quiz bowl stays ...

Re: Southeast End Of Year Poll
VA other than DC Metro is acceptable, right? For my purposes, the SEgion is NC, TN, SC, GA, AL, MS, FL, and LA, plus VA outside the Metro area. Here are all the people I have played in person who you should vote for: From my own team, Ewan Mitchell is a senior and as far as I know is the best trash ...

Is anybody else interested in getting together a NASAT team from NC? NASAT info is here: https://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewt ... =2&t=23781. I would have some interest in this event, a nationals tournament with teams representing different states. Thank you.

Re: Cross-Post: NAQT Timing Discussion
Perhaps NAQT would be more amenable to changing the rule for college quizbowl only? I don't think high schoolers have similar complaints, especially because NAQT timing rules are pretty standard for high school, whereas the vast majority of college tournaments use different timing rules (5/5/5). (F...

Re: 2019-20 NC Discussion
Since it's the winter break for North Carolina quiz bowl, I thought I would post some of my thoughts about who the best teams in NC are right now. One caveat: NC has only had a few tournaments this year so far. NCSSM looks to be the top candidate for the best team in NC this year, and criminally und...

Geography Questions
WARNING: East Chapel Hill people, please don't look. I'll read these to you all at some practice. I read some geography questions on the Discord a bit ago, and I would appreciate any feedback you all can give. They're supposed to be roughly HS Nats/Easy college level. https://docs.google.com/documen...

Re: Preseason Discussion
This is incredibly overly optimistic. I don't really cover many categories well at the high school level; just geography and a few bits of other categories. Also, Ewan does a good deal of literature and trash in addition to history. We also just barely got T-49 at HSNCT, and we lose a lot of seniors...

I would also like to add a few points of consideration to this conversation as I am one of the rising freshmen from Smith Middle School. Re: 2019-20 NC Discussion
Seeing all that has been posted in this thread, I have to say that I agree with almost all of it, and I will add to it with some thoughts of my own. Teams are loosely organized by geographical area in order to highlight the very correct statement that teams in NC are heavily clustered in certain are...

What do you all think of this question? One people of this area was found to use a bilabial trilled affricate which they hid as it was mocked by neighbouring peoples. A road through this area gives access to the Mapinguari National Park near Lábrea, but also allowed access to forests that were turne...

Re: Why isn't Bollywood canon?
However, the main argument for this OP was trying to include more Bollywood movies in the trash distribution, as I don't know much about Indian art film in the first place. The other thing that was also on my mind yesterday was the India film tossup at NSC that included Lagaan along with Apu Trilog...

Re: 2018-19 NC discussion
Here are my rankings for the best high school teams in North Carolina: 1. East Chapel Hill High School (Chapel Hill)- I do play for this team. However, there is a strong argument to be made for East. We won Bonfire of the Manatees. We finished the Enloe tournament 5/18, with a 5-4 record, all those ...

***** In no particular order***** 1: Buzz with your index finger. One of my teammates who was on the 2017 National Ocean Sciences Bowl championship team told me to try this. Unlike [pyramidal] quiz bowl, success in [non-pyramidal] ocean sciences bowl is heavily dependent on buzzer speed (which, in ...

My apologies for reviving this thread, but it seems to have been revived before. Re: Mixing Up Teams
The middle school I did quiz bowl at (Smith, in NC) played with unstacked teams for at least 1 tournament of the year, and sometimes more. I thought it worked alright, but then I don't really have a lot to compare it with. Another way the coach at Smith divided teams in tournaments was to make an A ...
