Re: Packet submission thoughts
I ran the numbers on ACF Winter a while ago. Half packets submitted by the +$25 deadline have questions make it into the final set about 75% of the time, but this number falls to 25% for the $50 deadline. After the +$50 deadline, questions are never used. I think players have an implicit understandi...

Re: Scholarly History Books
The original author of the resource list gravitated towards very large (and often boring and textbook-y) books. Here are some highlights, ordered somewhat by theme, from my time as a history major. There are some full books, but these are mostly journal articles and book chapters, which can be easie...

Re: 2023 ARCADIA Specific Question Discussion
There was a bonus where “Petri dishes” was an “accept but do not reveal” option for the first part followed by a third part where Petri dishes was the answer. This setup basically guarantees that any team who correctly answers Petri dishes for the first part will miss the third part. I think prompti...

Re: Trophies vs Plaques
The cost of your trophy was $42, +$5 for the logo insert. It was 28" tall, which was the tallest they had available. I would have made it larger if it was an option. We went with plaques for 2nd-4th. They were 8"x10". They cost $48 each, with engraving. How did shipping costs for the...

Trophies vs Plaques
I recently took Chicago's (very nice) UG Championship trophy out of its box for the first time so that we could put something shiny on our table at the club fair. It's now going back into the box for the foreseeable future. Trophies, while excellent for posing with in photos, just aren't very practi...

Re: Addressing a common moderator error
I think that’s a good suggestion. It also addresses the small problem that moderators often don’t give any thought to the time limit until several seconds have passed, since most of the time an answer is delivered before the time limit becomes relevant. If the moderator starts counting on their fing...

Re: Addressing a common moderator error
I think the distraction from being prompted for an answer on tossups is large enough that I’d be more willing to ditch “answer please” on bonuses than I would be to start doing it on tossups. To be clear, I am happy with the current rules. Maybe other people are different, but I have a good intuitiv...

Addressing a common moderator error
I’ve encountered the same moderator error a few times recently, so I thought it would be a good idea to point it out and encourage TDs to inform staff of the rule before each tournament. The error is a moderator saying, “Answer, please,” during a player’s five seconds after buzzing on a tossup. The ...

Packet Submission Announcement Timelines
This year's announcement for ACF Winter was made one week before the -$50 deadline. While a one week gap isn't the end of the world, last year's gap of three weeks is preferable. Editors of packet submission tournaments should give more than one week's notice when announcing deadlines. Forum posts n...

I see that the sample questions on NAQT’s website now list the questions as tossup-bonus-tossup-bonus instead of printing all of the tossups together, followed by all of the bonuses together.
