Re: 2022-23 High School Midseason Team Poll
I’m probably biased here, but another Illinois team to consider is University Lab . They haven’t had the chance to play much this year due to the loss of uiuc as a tournament hosting site, and most of the remaining tournaments with competitive fields are long drive away in Chicago/Rockford. However,...

Re: 2022 ACF Winter – Specific Question Discussion
I negged the cyanobacteria question with "gymnosperms" because some species of cycads produce the neurotoxin BMAA, and many other plants and other eukaryotic organisms also produce it. I probably deserved to get negged for that because BMAA is most often known as a cyanotoxin and also gymn...

Re: Earlybird Online (10/3/2020)
I just wanted to clarify what is going on, because Iain is being treated really unfairly right now and the criticism isn’t deserved at all. People may have misunderstood my post and what I meant by “Dunbar and [another team] are taking up spots in the field”. Iain did not remove "less competiti...

Re: Earlybird Online (10/3/2020)
It said this tournament is closed to teams from Illinois and Indiana, then why were Dunbar and [another team] allowed into the field when they are from Kentucky and [another state], respectively? I had a D team on the waitlist and on September 18 I requested that it enter the field as soon as it exp...

Thank you to the eleven people who submitted a ballot for the preseason poll! Each team received a certain amount of points depending on their placement (1st place received 10 points, 2nd place received 9 points, and so on). To achieve more accurate results, the highest and lowest rankings for each ...

Re: 2020-21 Groger Ranks Preseason Poll
Although this year is one of the comparatively weaker years in the Illinois circuit, there are still teams in Illinois that are capable of making deep runs at 2021 nats (assuming that they aren't cancelled). I thought that I might mention some Illinois teams that the Quiz Bowl Happy Hour excluded fr...

Re: Illinois 2020-21
I believe Jared Dong transferred to IMSA, which already has a solid team that I believe is still fairly young but will definitely improve over the season. I don't recall if Andy Tang is still playing at the moment but he was quite good in freshman year, putting up 40 PPG alongside Tim Cho while play...

Re: Illinois 2020-21
Here are my thoughts on the possible NAQT state contenders this season. Stevenson: Despite the loss of Govind Prabhakar, who was arguably one of the top three best history players in the entire country for basically his entire high school career, Stevenson still seems to be the team to beat in Illin...

Illinois 2020-21
It’s almost the start of the school year in Illinois, as well as the start of a new quizbowl season that will be so different in so many ways, from the loss of many top players to the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic. Does anyone have any predictions or thoughts on the new title contend...

The stats for the University Lab vs Stevenson A game in Round 29 are incorrect. I should have 3 negs (TUs 13, 22, 23), and Dylan should have 2 negs (TUs 5 & 24).

• Peroxisome: can I see the EM clue? I held off buzzing on that until Refsum since I wasn't certain that peroxisomes were the only organelles that could be described that way. Re: Illinois 18-19
With only 260 students in its top four grades, University Lab is a small school according to NAQT's revised definition. Prior to 2018, it was not eligible for small school status because it is a non-boundaried selective-admissions public school, and not a private or traditional public school. Chicag...

Re: Best Individuals in Illinois
I think I should be slightly lower on the list, although I was the top scorer on my team at a few 2017-18 season tournaments. This year, I have mostly been a fourth scorer/backup player because I don't have much of a niche on the team. Kevin, Dylan, Tim, Ethan, Olivia, Aristotle, and Govind are obje...

Re: 2018 Scobol Solo Discussion
I thought the set was well-written overall. The tournament went smoothly (with the exception of the server crashes) and I enjoyed my experience there. I was fine with most of the distribution, but I have a few comments about the geography questions. Some of them were well-placed in the geography cat...

Re: Illinois 18-19
Uni might go to tournaments in Chicagoland such as the New Trier Solo and the IHSSBCA Kickoff at Stevenson, just for the purpose of playing better teams and improving. We will definitely be attending Earlybird and the Barron Robinson Memorial Invitational.

Re: 2018 SSNCT Pre-Nats Discussion
I am a player at University Laboratory High School in Illinois, a school of 330 students (adjusted by IHSA to 445 due to Uni being a selective-admissions school). I was looking over the stats from the year I was in 8th grade and it seems like Uni never qualified for the SSNCT during the 2016-17 acad...

Hello,
Does anyone know when All-State Teams will be released? I don't think I will make it, but I am just curious to see if my teammates make it.

I think the Sectionals packets were pretty well-written, though wording was a little difficult to understand. And this is probably a dumb question, but do CE and Geo fall under Misc for IHSA? Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to IHSA State, but I wish good luck to all of you who are goin...

Re: Illinois '17-'18
I thought that the sectional set was well-written for the most part. One problem that I noticed was that the questions seemed inconsistent in difficulty--some answerlines were far too specific for this level, such as the Checkers speech and the Calvin cycle tossups, while others were too easy, like...

Re: Illinois '17-'18
Our moderator at the East Central Illinois sectional stumbled a couple of times on questions and forgot to prompt us on a lot of the bonuses. Some of those questions were worded weirdly, or maybe it was just the moderator. I remember one myth question where I didn't buzz because he said "this f...

Re: Illinois '17-'18
It seemed to me that some of the questions had unclear wording as to what the question was asking for. I remember several toss-ups where the wording was confusing, especially regarding the words "the/this/those". Other than that, I thought the set was fairly well-written and the difficulty...

Re: Illinois '17-'18
I think A set is slightly harder than novice level. Novice typically includes the last few lines of the SCOP MS set as well as one or two more lines at the beginning. Still, at the tournament, the questions were easy for both teams, resulting in many buzzer races with the teams that we played.

Re: Illinois '17-'18
All-Sectional does not always reflect a player's performance. It really depends who votes, who you play against, and who you are on a team with. Typically, nobody on my team makes All-Tournament because the PPG is evenly distributed, hurting our chances of seeming like an "outstanding" pla...
