Re: Teammate Appreciation Thread

Shoutouts to everybody in the UMN quizbowl club for being awesome people and great friends. I'd almost certainly forget somebody if I tried naming names so this is for everyone. Your willingness and enthusiasm to drive 8+ hours to play quizbowl tournaments is extremely admirable, a little alarming, ...

Re: ACF Nationals 2022 Specific Question Discussion

This might be an issue deserving of its own discussion elsewhere, but the tossup on "violin" in jazz in one of the later packets explicitly names the jazz style developed by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, which has an ethnic slur for the Roma people in it. Given that it is the na...

Re: 2022 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

My knowledge of biology and genetics isn't the best, but can I ask what the reasoning was behind having "this phenotype" as the indicator for the death tossup? A lot of people I talked to at our site were really confused by that question, since it seemed like a fairly obtuse way to ask for...

Thanks to everybody who came out to play this! Brandon Jones won the packet reading with a very impressive 140 points.

The packet has been posted to the archives under the impromptu title "Master Quest." Here is the link if you want a shortcut.

Zelda Packet

I wrote 20 tossups on the Legend of Zelda series that I will tentatively be reading on the Quizbowl Discord server some evening during the week of January 10th. I'll have a more exact time and date in the near future. The tossups all involve clues from the mainline Zelda games, some of the side game...

Re: Paired Tossups and Bonuses

Speaking solely as a staffer here, paired tossups and bonuses have been my favorite part of the NAQT online question system and some of the housewrites following the trend. The extra mental capacity that gets saved by not having to switch tabs and/or keep track of two separate copies of the packet a...

Of the ones that ended up getting used to some degree: WUSTL A's fairy tales bonus, UNC B's Penguin Island tossup that got bonusified, Minnesota B's Brothers Karamazov tossup, Liberty A's Iva...

Re: The Quizbowl Packet Archive DESPERATELY needs an overhaul.

I think the most pressing issue is simply separating the full-subject tournaments from the vanity sets, especially if it's a relatively simple change. It's more in tune to Jack's original concern and would certainly make browsing through the collegiate page a lot less onerous, as others have pointed...

I heard that this tournament doesn't have an advantaged finals; could I ask for the reasoning behind this decision? I could be wrong, but to me it seems pretty standard in quiz bowl to have advantaged finals by default, foregone only with a good reason (like a large number of rounds or playing the ...

Why Doesn't Quizbowl Use Citations?

A recent conversation on the Discord inspired me to finally get this down in words. In every academic field and for any piece of nonfiction media that wants to be taken seriously, citations of external sources are essential. They give legitimacy to what's being reported. Because of this need for cit...

I can't really see personal mics being useful in this situation. And if you ...

Speaking as a post-9/11 child, the 2010 cutoff for video games is concerning. Some of my fondest memories of video games are from what I played in early childhood and formative years growing up, which only partly coincides with games post-2010. Like, Club Penguin was unironically The Shit™ at school...
