Re: Where Are You Going Next Year? (Collegiate 2022)

I'll be going to Cornell for law school. I'm not sure how much time I'll have, but I'll try to staff/play depending on my schedule.

Re: Okemos Spring Invitational, April 20th 2019

Joseph Chung's conduct at this tournament is being investigated. Once this investigation has concluded, an official response will be made detailing our findings. Any questions about this investigation should be directed to me. Thank you. EDIT: I have no formal links with the Okemos club; my involvem...

Re: Okemos Spring Invitational, April 20th 2019

As someone who would very much like to get to the bottom of this, I think that the best option here is to see if Joseph's stats hold up at HSNCT (which I believe is the next tournament that Okemos will be playing). I don't think this is as cut and dry as Jakob said, but it's hard to prove or disprov...

Re: 2019 NAQT SCT Central (9 Feb 2019)

Thanks to Mizzou for running a great tournament! There are a few issues with the stats which are listed below: - In D1 and D2, the individual stats show the Games Played in the 15s column, the number of powers in the 10s column, and so on so that each stat is one column to the right of where it shou...

I will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and certainly plan to play quizbowl there.

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

Yeah, it could be a place for bonding, but only if people used it (which I don't think they would, at least not in the current HS QB environment). The current QB Discord is the product of decades worth of mailing lists/IRC chats; starting and maintaining a MI quizbowl Discord as well as running the ...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

Also, an interesting idea: discord server for Michigan teams and players I don't know how useful this would be, since it would probably be used to do the same things as the Alliance website is meant to do (announce tournaments/news/help new clubs find their footing). The point of such a Discord sho...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

Thanks for the congratulations, Aleija. I agree that we should set goals for the summer; it's finals/ICT/ACF Nats/States season right now, so I don't think much progress will be made until those are over, but summer goals should definitely be set soon. I'm going to work on the mockup that I designed...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I've updated the mockup to add a "good quizbowl practices" section (which has been changed from the "how do I start a club" section) and have added an FAQ page (the "contact us" page is now the FAQ page and the contact form is below the FAQ section on the new FAQ page).

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I'm considering for Michigan's tournaments just outright banning teams of more than six, and teams of more than five when a school brings 2 or more teams, but that's not something I expect every tournament host to do. It's your call, but in my opinion, this isn't a good idea. I think the reason mos...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I like that website. I'm terrible at backend web design, but I'd be willing to contribute content (e.g. writeups that the webmaster could copy and paste) that didn't require me to learn programming languages. I also don't know whether Squarespace is like Google Sites in that it's easy to design, in...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I also think it would be a good idea to have a central place where tournaments are posted -- many people didn't know Winter Invitational was happening until I e-mailed them directly, because they don't religiously check the forums, and announcements are very quickly buried. If there were an easily ...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I think the initial goal (at least for the first few months) is maintaining what we have currently. If there is a website with a clear schedule and tips for starting/maintaining a quizbowl club at a school, there will be benefits to that. After a few months of that, then the next step should be to e...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I think the issue with Michigan is that we're going to need coaches to host tournaments if the number of tournaments around the state is to increase. It's very hard for any college club to help run tournaments that, for example, are in the Thumb because quizbowl-playing colleges don't really exist t...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I agree that we probably shouldn't have the MHSAA running quizbowl in the state, but I think that coaches will probably need to be very involved in order for the Alliance to be successful. A lot of outreach will probably necessitate the training of new TDs so that they can run their tournaments effe...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

I mean organization as in a group of people that are the overseeing body of quizbowl in the state, kind of like MOQBA in Missouri or Greater PA Quizbowl in Pennsylvania. Ideally this body should consist of representatives from different aspects of the current Michigan quizbowl system, such as colleg...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

Some advice based on past experience: - You NEED coaches involved in this as well as col...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

Regarding Harris's first point, I'm not saying that the Honors College tournament is using Jeopardy!-style questions this year. Perhaps my wording was a bit unclear, but I am fully in favor of the shift to NAQT questions. My point is that before last year, the Honors College tournament ran on non-py...

Re: Michigan 2017-2018 Schedule and Discussion

For the past few years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to experience good pyramidal high school quizbowl and have been the beneficiary of a strong quizbowl culture at my school. However, for many schools across the state, students are unable to play any form of good quizbowl and are stuck eith...

Re: What is the Best Way to Tell How Good a Player Actually

I am a big believer in using win shares to determine the strength of a player ( https://www.qbwiki.com/wiki/Hart's_Win_Share_Statistic ). This is similar to PPG but attempts to show how negs prevent other people on a team from answering and can therefore cause a team to lose up to 95 points (neg for...

Re: 2018 HSNCT sponsorship

I seriously question how this sponsorship helps NAQT in any way. Yes, the DI field was expanded and yes, NAQT probably wouldn't have done so without a sponsorship but is this really the best we can do? Has NAQT really stooped so far as to accept money from Russian oligarchs? Is there really no other...
