Re: Cambridge Open Online (5/24)

Obviously people who are gonna cheat will find a way to cheat even with a web-cam pointing at their face. There is nothing you can do to make remote mirrors as cheating-proof as in person events. But echoing back to the infamous cheating thread from earlier, the camera will at least be an obstacle a...

Directing bonus answers in Discord tournaments

I am happy that we got to play bonus questions for the Workshop mirror on Saturday, specially because of the strict policy of giving an answer within 5 seconds which sped up the tournament by a lot. But there were confusions about directing answers in bonuses that I've observed. In real life tournam...

Re: This Time, A Stern Warning

Free Zoom would actually work fine if people wanted to do a tournament by video. The 40 minute limit is not a big deal because you can do one session after another. Does the timer for the 40 minutes limit counts all the waiting time in between rounds? Even if it doesn't, quizbowl rounds can easily ...

Re: This Time, A Stern Warning

A possible way to mitigate cheating .... A minimally intrusive* way to prevent cheating is simply to have everyone participating in a tournament have their camera on and pointed at their hands. ..... I think this idea could work pretty well, for a problem that seems to be very hard to solve. I do w...

Someone told me they were interested in hosting an online mirror and then ghosted on me. I'm hoping that he'll decide to get in contact with me again.
Since an online mirror seems unlikely at this point, when will packets be released?

Also, just for funsy, I have some opinions about Florida players awards partially inspired by NBA that my insomniac brain came up with: MVP(Most valuable player): Taylor Harvey Taylor is the Steph Curry of Florida quizbowl, enough said. Taylor is the kind of player who powers a tossup on your favori...

I think cutting other categories to add 1/1 Math is an overreaction to this last ACF Nationals. I am not very good at most categories at the ACF Nationals level, usually when I play tournaments at that level I look forward to the Math questions. While I understand the editors' vision of blurting th...

Re: Why don't we have 1/1 math?

I support more math in quizbowl, though I am not sure about 1/1 every packet (even though I would love that for selfish reasons). I think certain arguments against more math in quizbowl in the form of "group theory and tensors already comes up in Physics" is missing the point. It might not be the be...

Re: Small Colleges, LACs, and ICT

Would this require some changes at the level of the college/department as well? Our quizbowl club didn't have a faculty adviser kind of thing, but a large part of why we were able to exist for the last four years was the support from the school in general. We are pretty well-funded. There may be an...

As someone who is the president of a quizbowl club at a LAC with a population of about 850, I have a lot to say about this. Re: ACF Regionals @ UCF (1/26/19)

First of all, an important fact here is that the teams involved are New College and UF B, not UCF. Also, the TD might have made a mistake, but I think it is unfair to say that he “shouldn’t be running a meaningful tournament for awhile.” If ACF had a clear guideline for situations like this one, at ...

- There was a bonus about functions whose squares are integrable, but it didn't have a note to accept things like "L2 integrable" or "in L2," which is the more formal way of talking about those functions (as opposed to "square integrable.") I agree, L2 integrable should even be the preferred answer...

I'd really like to reject this idea that there are parts of the literature canon "worth the time to read." Everyone has different tastes in literature, and saying that certain books or authors aren't worth the time to read is just beyond silly. Agree. Dostoevsky is my favorite author but I can't sa...

TDing a tournament was a stressful burden to my experience. If anyone is willing to take the burden to make the n-many teams who play to tournament happy, I don't think people with such pure intention would be cheating. Down here in the southeast we all know each other very well, it is hard to cheat...
