Field cap: 16 teams
Belton High School is very pleased to announce that we will hold our very first scholar bowl tournament, the Belton After-School Invitational Challenge (I guess that makes us BASIC), Thursday, March 15, 2018. It will be held at Belton High School, 801 W. North Ave., in Belton, MO. We would be honored if you’d join us for a fun evening of competition.
Team check-in and registration will begin at 3:20 p.m. in the BHS commons, and we hope to be underway with the first round of action by 3:50 p.m (after a brief team meeting at 3:40). Our aim is that the tournament will conclude for all teams at around 8:30 p.m.
This tournament will offer each team six rounds of 20 toss-up questions with rebounding bonuses. The question set we’re using does not indicate powers, so we will not offer powers or penalize for incorrect interruptions. We are using the Illinois Masonic Series question set for this tournament. This is the same question set to be used March 17 in Mexico, MO (BRIC). If you’re attending that tournament, avoid the conflict of participating in this tournament. More information about the set is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=20350.
We are opening up the tournament to only 24 teams with no opportunity for adding more. Only MSHSAA member high schools (or affiliates registered for scholar bowl) may attend. Schools may enter one or two teams (not more). Schools that enter two teams will be placed on opposite sides of the seeding pools. Each team may have six players per team (four active and two alternates).
Every team will play six games. To make sure that all teams are able to participate in all games offered, please make sure that if you register that you intend to compete in six matches, including consolation.
The top three teams in the tournament and the top eight individual scorers (after three rounds of preliminary play) will earn awards.
The price is $55 per team. We will offer one discount per school of $5 for a second team, $10 for allowing use of a functional buzzer system, and $10 for an experienced, approved moderator (maximum discount $25 per school).
Since our dinner break will be only about 35 minutes, we will provide dinner on site for just $5 per person. There will not be ample time to drive into town to any of the dining establishments during the short break as a team. Our dinner will consist of tossed salad with choice of dressing, pizza, a drink (either soda or bottled water), and a dessert. You may pre-pay this as a part of your enrollment so that you won’t have to buy the meal tickets on the night of the tournament. For every six meal tickets purchased in advance, we will provide one for free for a coach, driver, etc.
