LIFT VIII (10/18/08)

Postby BroNi » Thu May 08, 2008 11:00 am

Long Island's Fall Tournament (LIFT) VIII will be held on Saturday, 10/18/08 at Kellenberg MHS in Uniondale, Long Island, NY. We will "kick it up a notch" by asking NAQT for a regular IS set as opposed to the "A" sets we have been using in the past. More details as we get closer to the date.

Count Bergen in, probably for at least 3 teams.

You said you're NOT using an A set but the NAQT website says you are.

I believe that he said that Rutgers and Princeton already took up the 2 non A sets for the NY/NJ Fall season

I said we would "ask" for a regular IS set, doesn't mean we will get it. Princeton and Rutgers have the 2 regular IS sets for the Fall, and since I asked for NY/NJ exclusivity, NAQT said they only had an A set available. I think it's going to work out OK anyway, because a number of the powerhouses will head down to TJ's, and since 90% of the 68 teams we had last year go to maybe 2 or 3 tournaments a year, an A set will do.

Though I know the definition of hyperbole, I would like to take issue with your math. I can vouch that 11.8% of last year's field went to more than a few tournaments last year.

Seriously, almost certainly Charter A will be headed to TJ. Whether any of the other teams come to you will be a topic of discussion when we meet next week. If not, we'll be back in a future year.

Information concerning LIFT VIII

- $60.00 First team, $50.00 each additional team
- Discounts: $10.00/buzzer system, $10.00/moderator, $10.00/100 mile travel (based on Google maps from town to Uniondale, NY): maximum total discount $60.00
- NAQT set 80A (20/20 untimed)
- Guaranteed at least 6 games
- Location: Kellenberg Memorial HS in Uniondale, Long Island, NY, 30 miles E!!! of NYC, right off of Exit M4 West from the Meadowbrook Parkway

Registration will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 8:45 a.m. The Award ceremony will be at 6:00 p.m. Last year’s problem of running very late will be addressed by using more experienced moderators. I would encourage you to bring experienced Alumni to help moderate...you'd get a discount!

As in the past, we will have a constantly updated projection of the preliminary results as soon as they are entered for all to see and check during the day.

Last year we had 68 teams from 28 schools. We can accommodate around 85 teams. So as an early Registration incentive, from now to Sept. 27th, we will not place any limit on the amount of teams that a school would like to bring. However, I reserve the right to limit the number of teams from any school that registers after that date.

Register by posting here, or email to broZZnigZZelZZ@kellZZenZZbergZZ.org (eliminate the Z’s!)

Last summer, I had gathered a large # of email contacts from the Northern Eastern seaboard, from DC to Boston, MA. This summer the computer with that address book went down. My IT guy is trying to save it, but if ANYONE has saved an email with those contacts could hit “Reply to All” and just write “Testing” or something similar, it would be appreciated, not only by me but by the 3 or 4 other TD’s who have contacted me about using it!

Edit: I've got to get those compass directions right!

I'm attempting to get a Byram Hills squad together... considering the volatility our team experiences in attendance, we may have anywhere from 0-3 teams. I'll let you know as we get closer.

Field (as of 9:13 pm, 10/15)

Bergan Ct. Acad, NJ (3)
Deer Park, NY (2)
E.O. Smith, CT (2)
East Hampton, NY (2)
Friends Acad, NY (2)
Half Hollow Hills W, NY (1)
Hunter College, NY (3)
Mineola, NY (1)
Mt. St. Mary's Acad, NJ (2)
North Babylon, NY (2)
North Shore, NY (1)
Our Lady of Mercy Acad, NY (1)
Port Jefferson, NY (2)
Ranney School, NJ (2)
St. Peter's Prep, NJ (2)
Seton Hall, NJ (4)
Stuyvesant, NY (4)

36 teams, 17 schools. Sign-up had been really slow, but has picked up recently. Remind me next year to check SAT dates AND PSAT dates!!!

We are probably going to go with the flow and have a prelim bracket, then playoff brackets, instead of single elimination.

32 teams from 18 schools. 4 brackets of 8 teams in the prelim. rounds. Top 2 from each bracket (along with their rank)

Seton Hall A (7-0, 347.14 PPG, Seeded 3rd), Hunter B (6-1, 397.86, 5th)
Hunter A (7-0, 590.71, 1st), Seton Hall B (6-1, 213.57, 7th)
Bergan A (7-0, 412.86, 2nd), Stuy B (6-1, 237.86, 6th)
Stuy A (6-1, 416.43, 4th), EO Smith A (5-2, 216.43)

made the top two playoff brackets (Odd seeds in one and Even in the other). Special mention must go the Half Hollow Hills West (5-2, 401.43) who just missed top 2 in a tough bracket.

Top individuals from the prelims: Guy (Hunter A) 162.86 PPG, Matt (HHHW) 81.43, Christina (Ranney A) 79.29, Lily (Hunter B) 73.57 and Aidan (Stuy A) 65.71. A special Halloween mask was presented to Slytherin (EO Smith B) for 14 negs in 7 games.

A 3 game round robin followed which produced a clear 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in each bracket, so...

For 7th place
Seton Hall B (155) d. EO Smith A (100)
For 5th place
Seton Hall A (295) d. Stuy B (80)
For 3rd place
Hunter B (255) d. Bergan A (200)
For the Championship
Hunter A (415) d. Stuy A (230)

It was the first time all day that any opponet scored in triple digits v. Hunter A. Trophies were awarded to top 8 teams. Full stats will hopefully come out today.

Aaron ... be realistic. "A" packet or not, Guy AS AN INDIVIDUAL put up those numbers! On an untimed/20 question per game format, that is an obscene number. 200 per game?

For what it's worth, one of my teammates (not usually on the A-team put up about 29 PPG in the prelims, and my actual A-teammate put up 35 points in the one prelim game he was there for.

Guy,

I am certainly not doubting your abilities. Yesterday's performance was truly amazing! I just think that "expecting" 200 ppg from an individual is a bit much. I do not remember reading the bonus you mention earlier, but I will look at it this week. I agree with you and the many others out there who have been critical of the quality of this packet.

Thank you, and I realize that you're not doubting my abilities. Rather, I was just making a dispassionate observation with respect to Aaron's points. 200 PPG would be absurd.

I'm sorry if I was a little too sarcastic. Yeah 162 ppg is absolutely mind boggling, and thinking about it, 200 ppg is all twenty tossups, or ten tossups and seven powers, or 14 powers, all of which would have been truly amazing. Perhaps one day we will see it, but that day has yet to come.

In re HHHW: there was some definite bracket grief to be had; Stuy A had to face Stuy B in the first round of playoffs, which probably hurt Stuy B's rankings considerably. I'm not complaining however; it wasn't the fault of bad bracketing, but rather simple bad luck. Overall, it was a very well-run tournament.

It was not just bad luck for STUY B ... In the other half of the top bracket, both Hunter A/Hunter B, and SHP A/SHP B had to play each other as well. The intent from the start was not to have a single-elimination playoff. Had all 36 teams come, there would have been a six-team round robin for the championship. As there were only 32 teams, the final round-robin had to be either eight or four teams. Add to this that "A" packets only contain twelve rounds.

While HHHW's situation was unfortunate, I do not know what else to say. Did they outscore many of the teams that made the playoffs? Yes. However, they did lose two games. (The fact that they lost both games on the last question is irrelevant.) We have all had teams lose extremely close games before. I give Mr. Blayne and his team a lot of credit. They came to the tournament short-handed and played brilliantly. They will be back.

I really wish Bergen and HHHW had their full A teams with them so we could get a true sense of what might happen as the year progresses. Still, both teams sans their captains did very well.

And yes, the set was ridiculous.
