4/20/19 - JHU Blue Jay Bowl

Post by vh42 »

UPDATE: This Tournament Has Been Rescheduled for April 20th, 2019

The Johns Hopkins University Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce the fifth annual Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Bowl Tournament!

When and Where
Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N Charles Street, Baltimore, MD. Check -in starts at 8:00 AM, and the tournament will begin at 9:00 AM. The building we will use for this tournament is Gilman Hall. Control will be in Gilman 132

Format
This tournament will follow official NAQT rules (which can be viewed at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html) with slight modifications on timing.

Question Set
We will be using NAQT Invitational Series #183. Per the NAQT qualification rules, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT).

Fees
$70 per team
-$10 per staffer
-$5 per buzzer
A minimum of $55 per team after all discounts applied
Please bring payment on the day of the tournament. Checks should made payable to "Johns Hopkins University."

Food
Pizza will be sold near lunch time, and various restaurants may be found in the vicinity of Johns Hopkins. To see a full list, please visit http://web.jhu.edu/cogsci/visitors/restaurants.html.

Parking
Parking is available at the South Garage, at the flat rate of $8 for the entire day.

Team & Roster Size
There is a maximum of 6 players and a minimum of 1 player on each team - no exceptions without explicit permission from the tournament director. Up to four members may play at once. We recommend no more than four members on a team, so that students may play the maximum number of rounds.

Team Limit
Until one week prior to the multiple team registration deadline (March 28), only three teams from a school may register; subsequent teams (up to an additional two, for five total) from the same school will be placed on the waitlist. Following March 28, 2019, two additional teams from that school on the waitlist will be moved off of the waitlist and registered (assuming that there are spots still open).

Team Cap
The field is capped at 18 teams.

Registration Deadline
Please fill out the registration form (https://goo.gl/forms/FaqGCfScJJcfsG6p2) by April 1st. By April 5th, please provide us with a tentative roster - it can be changed it later, but having a roster just makes our stats person's job much easier.

If you would like to make any changes to your registration details, email us at [email protected]

Timeline
Just to recap, here are some important dates:
April 11, 2019: Multiple team deadline (see above)
April 15, 2019: Registration deadline
April 19, 2019: Roster deadline

We are capping the field at 18 teams now as we do not currently have enough staff for a 24-team field.

We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but we have had to reschedule the Blue Jay Bowl for April 20th. We are aware that this date is passover and may affect the ability of some teams to participate. Additionally, we are extending the registration deadline to April 15th. The multiple team deadline will be April 11th.

This is the second time this semester that Johns Hopkins has cancelled/rescheduled within two weeks of the tournament. That's a huge inconvenience for high school teams seeking to make travel arrangements with their administration. In addition, it precludes any sort of make up event being scheduled in that region, crossing a good weekend off the calendar (I'm speaking in a general sense, I'm not saying this is impacting any events that Penn State is organizing). For what reasons have two tournaments been scrapped last minute, and why weren't those reasons figured out further in advance? These aren't good norms for a circuit to have.

Both instances of our cancellations/rescheduling have been due to the University informing us at very late dates that our tournaments will not be able to occur (despite us submitting our events and room bookings many months in advance). For Winter, we were informed two days before the tournament that our event had been cancelled, all of our booked rooms had been revoked, and that we would not be able to hold the tournament at all. For Blue Jay Bowl, we were informed this morning that our tournament coincided with an alumni event which prohibited us from booking any rooms on campus.

We understand that our late rescheduling/cancelling causes major issues for teams and schools who have already made travel arrangements. We hope that this will not occur anymore in the future, and have been trying our best to prevent such instances in the future.

This is the same day as UMD's High School Terrapin mirror and will likely have a significantly reduced field because of that.

We have 18 teams registered and are capping the field. If possible, we would like to have rosters by Friday, April 19th.
