DC Metro 2017-2018 Date Claim Thread

Post by J. Young »

Thanks to everyone who has previously maintained this thread.

I will be managing the calendar for quizbowl events in the DC Metro area for 2017-2018. I will also be including local college tournaments so that any colleges hosting tournaments for high schoolers can work around those - note that not all of the college tournaments listed permit high schoolers to compete. If you want me to add an event to this list, email me at [email protected], message me privately on the forums, or make a post in the thread below (with the latter preferred). If you could also include the type of question set you're using (NAQT IS sets, IS-A sets, housewrite, etc.), that would be very helpful. Happy tournament hosting and quizbowl playing, everyone! (Note heavy plagiarism from last year's thread due to lack of creativity  )

Centennial High School will host our fall tournament using an NAQT A set (introductory) on Sunday November 5 (SATs on Sat Nov $). Last year, over 100 teams showed up and we could not accommodate everyone. We will have 3 brackets: Varsity, Novice, Middle/Elementary. Less experienced teams even with with seniors or juniors can join the Novice bracket, though they will not be eligible for Nationals.

JHU would like to tentatively claim October 14, February 10, and April 7 for our Fall, Winter, and Spring Tournaments, respectively. Our fall tournament will utilize NAQT A-sets and our winter and spring tournaments will use regular NAQT sets. Whether or not our fall tournament will be restricted to novices or not is TBD, and dates are tentative, depending on when Penn Bowl, SCT, MUT, and other similarly-timed college tournaments are.

As for the plagiarism - don't sweat it, it looks great :D

The first weekend in December is the canonical date for VCU Winter, and the second weekend is the canonical date for GSAC. We could probably co-exist, but I think we'd both get better fields with another date that works.

You might not want to use blue to denote things, since that's also the natural color of links to tournament announcements.

As an outsider, I think an inevitable discussion that will need to be had in the future is how will a crowded calendar be handled in a region that encompasses teams from Roanoke to Baltimore, a distance of nearly 300 miles. If the circuit continues to grow at all ends, you'll probably need to be comfortable with the idea that UVA or Maggie Walker hosts on a high school tournament on the same day as Johns Hopkins or Centennial High, as examples.

Of course, exceptions should be made for certain tournaments if they're of sufficient importance, but that's an argument for you all to hash out.

Piggybacking on Fred - you'll have a much calmer time of it if, when those two tournaments on the same day at the corners of your circuit conflict, they work together to pick the same question set!

Due to a clerical error I gave you the wrong date. Instead of hosting out tournament on September 9th, our Virginia Tech Fall Kickoff will be hosted on September 16 instead. The set is still planned to be a NAQT A set.

It might be good to note the VHSL playoff deadlines, as well.
Region -- January 27th
Super Region -- February 10th

SWATA
(The Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance, encompassing all counties from Wythe Co. westward) is planning on hosting another set of 4, possibly 5 tournaments this season. We are currently in the process of setting dates and host sites for these tournaments, but are tentatively looking at the following:
October 14th
November 11th -- Legion Memorial Invitational Tournament II @ Gate City High School (NAQT A-set)
December 9th/16th
January 6th -- Bulldog Invitational Tournament II @ Tazewell High School

We are also currently discussing the possibility of opening 1 or 2 of this year's SWATA tournaments to teams outside of our geographic footprint. Stay tuned for details on that; if hosted at a centralized location near Interstate 81, said tournament(s) would be easily accessible to teams from the Knoxville, Roanoke, SE Kentucky, Western North Carolina, and Southern WV areas.

SWATA's November tournament (yet to be named) will be hosted at Virginia High School (in Bristol) on November 11th, using NAQT IS-168.

SWATA has not yet elected to open any of our tournaments to schools outside of our geographic footprint. For the time being, only teams from Bland, Grayson, Wythe, Smyth, Tazewell, Russell, Buchanan, Dickenson, Washington, Wise, Scott or Lee Counties may register for SWATA tournaments.

There is slight interest for Tazewell High to plan a tournament after VHSL state. We would love for this to serve as a tournament for pre-nationals. I will discuss this with our coach. As for now, I would appreciate any response to a concept like this. We will be hosting the SWATA Bulldog Invitational. It is unknown whether this will be open outside of SWATA or not.

If anyone has any questions for our scholastic bowl team, you can shoot one to me and I will deliver it to our coach. Thanks!

The December iteration of SWATA tournaments, the Steele Memorial Invitational, will be hosted at Honaker High School on December 9th.

We are currently discussing the possibility of running a mirror of MBAT, which would make this the first SWATA tournament to not use an NAQT set.

This might be a dumb question/one that's been answered already but given VHSL's use of converted IS packets (including IS-174), does that mean that there just won't be a NAQT states in VA this year?

Presumably not given VHSL's use of the relevant NAQT set, as well as it being unlikely that many teams would be willing to play a college set.

Presumably not given VHSL's use of the relevant NAQT set, as well as it being unlikely that many teams would be willing to play a college set.
You're probably right, which would be disappointing since I think(?) that means VA teams only get to play 2 full IS sets besides VHSL stuff. Although, VA sent 11 teams to HSNCT last year and there are a bunch of strong MD teams this year, so there could be sufficient interest? DII SCT doesn't seem terrible; we would send a team if someone were to host a State Championship with it.

This event will use NAQT IS #174. Please note that this is the same set used at the Pennsylvania State Academic Competition later in April.
