BrainBusters Spring RESCHEDULED TO MAY 13 (Ithaca, NY)

Post by The Polebarn Hotel »

Ithaca High School is pleased to announce that the first annual BrainBusters Spring will take place on May 13 at Ithaca High School (located on 1401 N Cayuga St, Ithaca, NY 14850)! Registration will start promptly at 7:45 with staff and player meetings at 8:30. We hope to start the first round no later than 9:00.

BB Spring will be mirroring Prison Bowl, a regular-difficulty housewrite produced by our friends at Hunter College High School (more info about the set, including distribution, can be found here). We are setting a soft cap of 36 teams for bracketing purposes, but that can easily be expanded if we receive more interest. We will be using ACF timing rules (5 seconds for everything) and sudden death tiebreakers. Each team will be guaranteed nine rounds, and hopefully more based on how bracketing works.

To register for the tournament, or if you have any questions or concerns, just shoot me an email at casey.wetherbee @ icsd.k12.ny.us. In your registration email, you should include your school/team name, how many teams you will be bringing, how many buzzer sets and/or staffers you will be bringing, and contact information for your coach (or whoever else is in charge of your team). I will respond as soon as possible with an invoice and any other information you may need. Checks may be made out to "Ithaca High School Brain Team."

The base price will be $80 for the first team from each school and $70 for each additional team.
-$5 per functional buzzer
-$10 per staffer provided by the school (staffers will likely be assigned as scorekeepers, or readers based on experience)
-$5 per 200mi traveled (one way, according to Google Maps)
-$10 for any new team (i.e. any team that has never played at a BrainBusters event in the past)
The minimum fee per team is $50. Note that the first two discounts will only count towards the price for one team (bringing one buzzer and two teams will cost $145, not $140). However the latter two discounts apply to all teams from one school.

We are working on PACE certification, and I will post as soon as I know what our certification is. If I forgot to mention anything, shoot me a PM or an email and I will include it in this post. We hope to see you at IHS on May 13!

Casey,
I just wanted to denote that Plymouth is a small school.

Thank you for letting me know! I will add that to the field.

Additionally, I would like to add that there are some teams interested that haven't yet registered. If you would like to be added to the field, please send me an email at casey.wetherbee @ icsd.k12.ny.us.

We are rescheduling this tournament to May 13th because the date we had originally chosen seemed to conflict with many schools' spring vacations, among other issues. We hope that more teams will be able to come now that we have moved the date!

Just to clarify, this tournament is still definitely happening. We may field additional house teams in order to round off the field if necessary, though we do anticipate a few more registrations between now and the 13th. Feel free to PM me or send me an email if you have any questions or concerns.

BrainBusters Spring has received Platinum certification from PACE! This means that the top 25% of teams will be able to register for the National Scholastic Championship (or, at least, reserve a spot on the waitlist).

We have plenty of space for more teams to sign up, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me.

With the field set at eight teams, we are planning to run a round robin for prelims and then split into playoff brackets of four, followed by a final. Please try to arrive at or before 8:30 for registration so we can start as soon as possible. We will provide bagels and juice for breakfast.

Troy's stats for the final are presumably incorrect--they're listed as getting or negging on 21 tossups. I assume this is the reason for their abnormally low ppb in that game.

That said, I'm really glad to see Albany-area teams going to tournaments (see also Amsterdam at NHBB nationals and Berlin at SSNCT).
