Big Lake Brawl at Wallenpaupack (03/18/17) (Hawley, PA)

Post by RNeenan »

The Big Lake Brawl Inaugural Tournament will take place at Wallenpaupack High School in Hawley, PA on Saturday March 18, 2017. We are located in NE PA, 15 minutes off I-84. While this is our first tournament, we will have several experienced people on site to help make things run smoothly, so we hope you will consider joining us!

Set: IS-165 A. While we are looking to attract new teams from NEPA, all teams are welcome! We are planning for a field of 18, although that may be expanded to a hard cap of 24 if staffing and buzzer availability permits.

Standard rules will be in effect (powers, negs, etc., with sudden death overtime) with ACF timing (five seconds for everything). Formatting will be standard: round robin in the morning, with rebracketing and a round robin in the afternoon. A final/advantaged final will be played as necessary, with trophies for top teams and prizes for top scorers.

Base Fee: $75 for the first team, $65 for each additional team.

Discounts:
-$5 per working buzzer brought for use in the tournament
-$10 per staffer provided by the school.
-$10 per school for new schools – schools that have not played quiz bowl for at least 2 years. For local schools, WVIA and IU tournaments do not count against you for this discount.

The minimum fee per team is $40.

We will offer pizza for lunch on site. Prices and details TBD.

To sign up (or for further information) please email me at [email protected] with how many teams you would like to register, number of buzzers, and staff. Then visit our site here. Download the registration/invoice form and bring it with you along with your payment on the day of the tournament. We welcome anyone living close to us to come to volunteer as well!

We look forward to hosting our first tournament and hope to see you there!

We have reached our prelim cap of 18 teams. Because we are already capped with staff, we will not expand unless we get interest from teams bringing more staff.

Due to snow, our tournament was postponed. We are working on a new date, and I will post it here when we have it.

This did happen on Sunday 3/26. "Ilium" team of three had a surprise upset of Delaware Valley A in the full-round robin prelims, then held on in the second game of an advantaged final against DV A to take the tournament. Our teams (Berwick) had a lot of fun competing with students from DV, "Ilium", Parkland, and host Wallenpaupack. Hopeful that next time weather cooperates and we get more participation from first-time quiz bowl schools.

Thanks to Coach Neenan for a well-organized event and Scott Blish for his usual TD-ing flair! Hope Wallenpaupack will host again next year!
