2016-17 KQBA Goldenrod Cup

Post by Rococo A Go Go »

The Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance is excited to announce the third annual edition of the Goldenrod Cup! The Goldenrod Cup is an annual competition that aggregates the results of affiliated good quizbowl tournaments held in the state of Kentucky. A Kentucky team who wins a Goldenrod Cup event will receive 10 points, a team who finishes 2nd will receive 9 points, and this continues down to 1 point for 10th place; after the conclusion of the last Goldenrod Cup event the team with the most points will receive a trophy commemorating their achievement. To qualify as a Goldenrod Cup affiliate, a tournament has to be a varsity high school quizbowl tournament in Kentucky, must be open to at least all Kentucky high school teams, must be announced either on HSQuizbowl or be included in NAQT's schedule, must use pyramidal questions as determined by KQBA, must offer at least four games to attending teams, must take place between August 1 and May 6, and must be announced at least one month before it takes place.

What's New?
KQBA has decided to award 2nd and 3rd place prizes this year, as well as an award for the highest finishing small school team. We will be using the same definition of small school that NAQT uses; any changes to NAQT's policy will be adopted by KQBA as well. We've also added a couple standards in terms of scheduling, so that we can define the "Goldenrod Cup season" as roughly existing between August 1 and May 6. This policy has been adopted because we would at least like to have the awards determined before high school nationals season, as it becomes much more difficult to get awards to teams after school has ended.

Tournament Schedule
August 27: Glasgow Scottie Invitational (Glasgow)
October 8: Casey Young Memorial Tournament (Louisville)
October 29: University of Kentucky Fall Championship (Lexington)
November 19: WKU Hilltopper Invitational (Bowling Green)
December 3: Class Act High School Invitational (Louisville)
January 7: Fleming County Academic Tournament (Flemingsburg)
January 14: Rotary International Academic Challenge (Madisonville)
March 4: Kentucky NAQT State Championship @ WKU (Bowling Green)
March 19:Louisville Spring Academic Tournament(Louisville)
April 15: University of Kentucky Spring Championship (Lexington)

In addition, we have a new constituent tournament to announce: the Johnson Central Invitational, on December 3rd in Paintsville, is now part of the Goldenrod Cup! This will be added to the first post in the thread as soon as I can get ahold of Nick to do so. :)

We've never had two tournaments on the same day affiliate with the Goldenrod Cup, but this year we are lucky to have two good tournaments on December 3 in different areas of Kentucky. We encourage teams to attend whichever tournament works best for their team; for Goldrenrod purposes they will be treated exactly equally.

Any chance we can get the point totals updated? We've already had the Hilltopper and Class Act tourneys since the last time.
Thanks!

t-5. Woodford County A (31 points)
The standings going into the final event of the Goldenrod Cup are listed above. Seeing as how it is April 14 and no affiliated tournaments remain other than tomorrow's event at UK, we can safely congratulate Henderson County A for clinching this year's top spot. We can also congratulate Glasgow A for clinching the top small school award, as well as a guaranteed spot in the Top 3. The results of tomorrow's event will determine the second and third place finishers; in the event of a tie for second or third, the following tiebreaker will be used: the team with the most 1st place finishes in Goldenrod Cup events will be awarded, if the tie remains the team with the most second place finishes will be awarded, and if the tie remains the team with the most third place finishes will be awarded. If two teams finish the season with the exact same amount of Goldenrod Cup points and the same amount of first, second, and third place finishes, then we will simply declare a tie.

We will work on getting trophies out to the proper teams by the end of May; teams that are attending HSNCT may receive them then, otherwise we may just ship them to you.
