There Will Be Stock Clues

Post by ThisIsMyUsername »

At long last (after years of toying with the idea of writing this), I am ready to announce There Will Be Stock Clues, a culinary side dish...er, tournament that will be ready in time for the traditional post-CO August slot in 2017. This event will consist of 8-10 powermarked tossups-only packets written by me, with assistance from Max Schindler. The tentative distribution of each packet's 20 tossups is as follows:

4 Non-Trashy Savory
2 Non-Trashy Sweet
2.5 Trashy/Packaged Savory Foods
1.5 Trashy/Packaged Sweet Foods
2 World Culinary Traditions
1 Beverages
.5 Highbrow Restaurants
1 Lowbrow Restaurants
1.5 Food Shows/Celebrities
1.5 Food/Drink in Fiction/Films/TV
1 Kitchen Appliances/Gadgets
1.5 Misc.

These categories are all fairly loose. The savory category could be filled by a common-link on an ingredient clued from dishes from different cultures; a particular country, region, or city, clued from various dishes; a particular dish, based on its variations; etc. The questions in non-trashy savory and sweet will skew North American/European, but will still include fairly copious clues from other traditions. The World Culinary Traditions will be the same thing, except focusing only on non-North American/European cuisines. The other categories should be fairly self-explanatory.

Neither Thai nor bow tie will be mandatory. But the former will doubtless feature. (No comment about the possible presence of the latter in some pasta question.)

What's the status of this tournament (i.e. will it be complete and how many packets will there be?)

(I am simply asking to determine logistics for the summer opens; I do not mean to insinuate that it's not completed)

This is still happening. We have started writing it. But it would be very nice to get final confirmation soon from the Virginia site as to whether they're mirroring this or not, so we know the exact timeline to completion (i.e. whether it needs to be done by the first week of August).

Projected tournament length is eight packets. There will be powers. Questions will be capped at eight lines, but some will be as short as six, depending on what the subject matter seems to require.

If we fall behind, we may adjust the sub-distributions towards things we have an easier time writing on. If that's the case, we'll announce the changes as they are made.

The set is complete, and has been sent to the VCU site to be played tomorrow. We finished the full eight packets, and we managed to keep to the advertised distribution (interpreting it slightly generously).

I've asked the admins to create a private discussion forum. Those who played it at the VCU site are welcome to comment and also to let us know of any errors they catch that should be fixed before future mirrors.

We hope you enjoy the set.

This tournament was a veritable stew of delightful topics, seasoned with a perfect blend of Lawrencian refinement and Schindlerian degeneracy. Neither flavor overpowered the other in the course of doing a wonderful job of asking about many different kinds of foods and the many different ways in which they can be important to society. Difficulty-wise, it was neither too tender nor too tough. My compliments to the chefs. Everyone should play this.

This was the most fun I've had playing a quizbowl tournament. Thank you so much to John and Max for putting it together. I really hope someone else writes another food tournament soon.

The Oxford mirror was the last scheduled mirror of this tournament. A couple of people said they wanted a Skype mirror, but neither Max nor I is available to run one ourselves. If someone still wants to set one up, please e-mail me in the next couple of days to discuss. If no plans emerge for this by this Friday (10/20), I'll consider this tournament's run officially over, and I'll post the set to the archive.
