MacIntro II @ McMaster (Oct. 22nd, 2016)

Post by Protean »

McMaster is pleased to announce the return of our high school tournament MacIntro on Oct. 22, 2016.

Continuing the tradition of last year, this tournament is intended to be an introduction for new players and teams in the region to the format of Quizbowl. We will be using the SCOP Novice 7 set. We are hoping for at least 5 or 6 teams, obviously the more the merrier.

Logistics
Location: McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC)

Cost: The base fee for this tournament is set at $40 per team.

Discounts: To lower the costs of potentially cash-strapped teams and to encourage teams to invest in a buzzer system, we are offering a $10 discount per appropriate, working buzzer set (Note: This is a first come first serve discount. If we already have buzzers provided by other teams and do not use the one provided by your school, you are not eligible for the discount). We are also offering a $5 discount per shorthanded player (i.e. if you have a two player team, your team will pay only $30).

Timing: Please arrive at McMaster by 8:45am, we are hoping for a 9:15am start. Depending on the size of the field, the tournament should likely be done by 4pm.

Lunch: Please either pack your own lunch, or bring money to buy lunch on campus. There are numerous options available for food nearby which a McMaster quizbowl member will be happy to direct you towards.

For registration and additional information, please contact the TD, Peter Cordeiro ([email protected]), myself ([email protected]), or the McMaster Quizbowl Club ([email protected]). We hope to see you there!

Edit: MacIntro II has been gold certified as a qualifier for PACE's National Scholastic Championship (NSC). The top 20% of teams will qualify for PACE NSC.

Copy of email sent to teams:
Hello teams,

First of all, thanks for registering for MacIntro! Details about the tournament can be found below.

Tournament Location

The tournament will be held on the second floor of the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC). The building can be seen marked with a yellow four-pointed star in the attached picture. Please arrive in and around our tournament headquarters at Room 206/207.

Start Time

Teams should come at 8:45am and will be told more about the tournament and receive their schedules shortly after that. The actual games are set to begin at 9:15am. It is strongly recommended that if you are bringing buzzers to come early (i.e. 8:30am) so that we have time to test the buzzer systems and set them up.

Parking Options

McMaster has many options available in and around the university to park, but it is recommended that teams go to Parking Lot B (circled in the attached picture) that is located just east of MUSC. The flat rate for parking there is $7.00 for the entire day.

Lunch Options

Lunch is set to begin between 12pm and 1pm. There are many options both on and off campus that members of our staff will be happy to lead your team towards.

Tournament Format

MacIntro will be a round robin format (i.e. all teams will play each other). Depending on how many games the top teams win, the winner of the tournament could play a final or be chosen outright.

Additional Information

If you have any last minute inquires, comments, or concerns, please respond to this email or direct them towards Peter Cordeiro ([email protected]) or Raymond Chen ([email protected]) and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We wish you all the very best of luck!

Thanks to all the teams who participated in the second iteration of MacIntro! Another resounding thanks to all the staffers for helping to make this tournament happen including Jay, Aaron, Randi, Leslie, Raymond, Brian, Luka, and Joe! This is the first time we have had players visit us from a foreign land, and I hope they enjoyed it! Last but certainly not least, congratulations to champions Westmount A (Tim, Emaan, and Mengyu) who won an advantage final 300-265 over very formidable runners-up Central Richmond Hill A (Sherry, Kelvin, Daniel, and Eric).
