RIFT at Rice (Pennsylvania Novice, 10/15/16)

Post by uws10024 »

The Rice University Quiz Bowl Club is pleased to announce the Rice Invitational Fall Tournament (RIFT), which will be held on October 15th, 2016. This tournament is open to all high school and middle school teams.

Logistics

Check-in will begin at 8:00 A.M., and the opening meeting will start at 8:40, with matches beginning at 9:00. Upon your arrival, your team will need to submit any buzzers for discounts, and then we will collect money for entry fees and lunch ($8 per sandwich from Jimmy John’s, free drinks). Lunch will take place between noon and 12:45, immediately following round 6 or 7, depending on when the food arrives. An email containing all information regarding logistics (location on campus, parking, payment, etc.) will be sent to participating teams a few days prior to the tournament.

Format

This tournament will be run using the 2016 Pennsylvania Novice set, which is a high-school level tournament written by Carnegie Mellon and Penn State. More information about this year’s Pennsylvania novice set can be found here. Each school will receive a paper copy of the set at the end of the tournament. The schedule will depend on the number of registered teams, but more than likely, it will be a round robin amongst preliminary brackets, and then rebracket for a playoff round robin. We should be able to guarantee at least 9 games for each team. We will use NAQT rules, without a timer. We will set an initial field cap at 12 teams due to staff restrictions, and will maintain a waitlist for additional teams. Until we can raise the field cap, we’ll also set a cap of two teams from each school.

Entry Fees

$75 base fee for first team, $65 base fee for all additional teams. Minimum fee is $50 per team.
-$5 per functional buzzer system (applied to first team, must be functional buzzers)
-$10 per approved moderator (applied to first team)
-$40 for schools who have not played pyramidal quizbowl in the past three years (overrides minimum fee, applied to each team)

To register for this tournament, please fill out this google form here and send an email to me at hjp1 AT rice DOT edu. If you have any questions, you may either reply in this thread or email me at hjp1 AT rice DOT edu.

Field (teams/buzzers), current as of 9/24/16

Note: This tournament will be capped at 12 teams.
