North Carolina 2016-2017

Post by friendswithdave »

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities has set dates for all NCASA quiz bowl events during the 2016-2017 school year.

Oct 15 - Fall Quiz Bowl Tournaments - see note below
Jan 28 - Quiz Bowl Jamborees - kick-off to weekly quiz bowl meets
Mar 4 - Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments - statewide qualifiers for State Final
Mar 18 - Quiz Bowl State Finals

NAQT Introductory Sets will be used for all high school events except the State Final which will use an NAQT Invitational Set. NAQT Middle School sets will be used for all middle school events.

NCASA will work with member schools interested in hosting tournaments on Oct 15. These will be completely independent tournaments run and administered by host schools. NCASA will help member schools with marketing and tournament organization by providing sample schedules, summary scoresheets, NAQT contacts, and promoting the tournament to member schools. However, these will not be NCASA tournaments and are therefore open to all schools.

The Jamborees, Regional, and State Tournaments are free and open to all NCASA member schools. The school membership fee for 2016-2017 is $200 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. School districts that register all secondary schools receive a 50% discount off the registration fee. Cabarrus, Guilford, Durham, Iredell-Statesville, and Cumberland County are among those school districts who are expected to register all interested schools again this year.

We will provide additional details on host schools for all tournaments as they are established.

Anything ever around Ashville? We'd be coming from KY and I think the Triangle Area might be a stretch for us. Thanks

One great option for a tournament in the Western part of North Carolina (although not quite Asheville) is the Western Shootout hosted by South Caldwell High School. They usually host their tournament in mid-March on an IS-set.

Bonfire of the Manatees at Raleigh Charter

Post by betsynewmark »

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 9th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, October 29, 2016. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.

Affiliation: The tournament will use NAQT set IS-160 and will serve as a qualifier for the NAQT national tournament as well as PACE nationals.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired for the first six rounds using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at [email protected] with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers.

Teams may purchase copies of the tournament questions for $10. Please let me know ahead of time so I can make copies for your school.

Payment may be mailed either prior to October 29, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

Affiliation: The tournament will be mirroring the Harvard Fall Tournament XI set. We are currently seeking PACE certification.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds, and each team is guaranteed the full nine rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play with powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65 for the first team, and $60 for each team thereafter. There will be a $5 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers, and a $10 discount for each staffer. The minimum fee is $40 per team.

The fee will be paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to the North Carolina School of Science and Math.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions.
