Missouri Open - UMN (11/14)

Post by Muriel Axon »

On November 14, 2015, University of Minnesota will be hosting Missouri Open, a slightly-below-regular difficulty tournament. I've copied the following from the main tournament announcement, found here.
I’m pleased to announce Missouri Open 2015, a regular difficulty college tournament planned for the fall of 2015. Questions will be written and edited by Will Alston, Itamar Naveh-Benjamin, and Shan Kothari, with additional writing contributions from Rohith Nagari and Ewan Macaulay. We are aiming for mirrors of this tournament to be run throughout October and November 2015.

This tournament’s distribution and questions are inspired by those of National Academic Quiz Tournaments, but they will not use the exact distribution or format that NAQT uses. Packets will consist of 24 tossups and 24 bonuses according to the distribution we have outlined and will be played in their entirety. To ensure that games do not take too long, and to stick with the NAQT-inspired theme, tossups will be capped at five lines in length (before power-marks and guides) and bonus parts will be capped at two lines apiece.

The distribution is as follows:

4/4 Literature (1/1 US, 1/1 British, 1/1 Euro, 1/1 World and Other)
4/4 History (1/1 US, 1/1 Continental Euro, 1/1 World, 1/1 British, Classics, and Other)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other Science)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual, 1/1 Audio (including jazz) , 1/1 Other)
2/2 “Beliefs” (1/1 Religion, 1/1 Myth)
2/2 “Thought” (1/1 Social Science, 1/1 Philosophy)
1/1 Trash
1/1 Geography
1/1 Modern Politics/Institutions
1/1 Mixed and Other (an anything-goes category ala NAQT inspirations)
1/1 Additional Big Three + Other Arts

A separate packet of tiebreakers will be provided. In the event of a tie, a single question should be read from this packet in order to break the tie.

As the tournament’s name suggests, this tournament will be open-eligibility as previously discussed. We strongly encourage participation by veterans and strong high school players in this tournament.
We will be hosting the tournament in Blegen Hall on the West Bank of UMN. The tournament will begin at 9:00 AM, and teams should arrive by 8:30 AM to 440 Blegen for check-in. Here's our fee structure:

Base fee: $120, or $100 for teams from the same school
Buzzer discount: $5 per functioning buzzer
Staffer discount: $20 per competent staffer
Distance discount: $10 for >100 miles away

Minimum of $65, $45 for teams from the same school

Carsten Gehring and I are planning on playing this and, I imagine, are looking for some teammates.

We will likely be scrambling for moderators, and we plan to design a fee structure with a steeper moderator discount. Please let us know if you can bring someone!

Open as in Open?

If so I'd like to play; put me down as a free agent.

Yes, it's open eligibility - you don't need to be enrolled in school to play. I'm hoping that the relatively low difficulty of this event compared to most open tournaments will attract higher audiences nationwide than traditional open tournaments, though the timing may not be as convenient for everyone.

I made a team-formation spreadsheet so that people start registering. It's a bit sad-looking right now, but you can change that by signing up!

Stats are up. For about five rounds (until Andrew left), Andrew Hart and Rob Carson broke the Hoppes-Mikanowski limit, even after multiplying by 5/6 to correct for 24/24 per round.

I went 1/1/0 in the first round, not 3/6/1. Presumably Rob went 3/6/2 and the fiendish statskeeper done screwed up. On a related note, I find it questionable that we went 3/20/2 over the course of 24 questions in Round 6.

Sorry, that was my fault and will be fixed shortly.

This one was Peter's fault! You guys only went 3/19/2 during that round, since I'm guessing that Andrew probably didn't get a tossup after he had already left (and which Rob had also gotten).

I think I went 5/8/2, not 8/8/2, in round 9 (not least because the latter results in the teams combining for 25 tossups).

Thanks! As you could tell, I had some trouble deciphering handwriting. (Andrew Hart also noticed that a moderator docked you guys 100 points in round 2, which is also now fixed, along with another moderator error that docked Davis et al 50 points in round 4.)
